Kansas State rolls Kansas 56-16

By Trevor Graff

After an intriguing first half including a fake punt and fake field goal, the Sunflower Showdown finished the way many expected – with a 56-16 Kansas State Wildcat victory.

The Jayhawks held K-state to a three-and-out on the first drive of the game before marching down the field to draw first blood on a six-minute drive ending in a 19-yard touchdown pass to running back Tony Pierson.

Kansas State answered quickly with a quick strike 20 yard touchdown run from John Hubert tying the game at seven with four minutes to play in the first.

The Jayhawks pulled out every page in the playbook on the next drive. After what looked like a quick three-and-out Ron Doherty rushed 13 yards to convert the first down. The Jayhawks weren’t finished with special teams trick plays. On fourth and two and the Kansas State 23 Blake Jablonski completed a 12-yard pass to Toben Opurum to complete the fake field goal. Kansas went on to score on a 1-yard James Sims run to go up 14-7.

That would be the last time the Jayhawks stood tied with the Wildcats. After Nigel Malone of K-State returned an interception to the Kansas five the Wildcats ran out of time burned a timeout and missed the opportunity to score before the half.

The missed opportunity didn’t matter. K-State outscored the Jayhawks 28 to two in the tird quarter prompted Charlie Weis to play Michael Cummings at quarterback in the fourth quarter.
