A Nirvana Tribute You Might Actually Want to Hear
Usually, Nirvana tributes, and tribute albums in general, are not something that I get all that excited about. Tributes to Kurt, in particular, are often times underwhelming, if not completely aggravating, largely due to the fact that there are a lot of extra stipulations and unwritten rules when it comes to trying to pay a worthwhile and authentic homage to the prolifically tortured frontman. However, when long-running hardcore label Robotic Empire announced that they were releasing a tribute to In Utero in its entirety, my typically lackadaisical reaction to Nirvana tributes was finally roused.
With covers from artists like Ceremony, Thursday, Daughters, Mean Jeans, and Pygmy Lush, I couldn’t help but find a new excitement for such a release. The album also includes the late Jay Reatard’s cover of “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle”, which has lived in infamy, not only being on eof Jay’s bst recordings, but also one of his last. It appears remastered on In Utero: In Tribute, and sounds better than ever. Check out Jay’s cover here and pre-order the album, set for release on April 19th, here.
