KJHK Ellie FehligFlammy Huo: Why did you join KJHK?
Ellie Fehlig: I heard about it through my brother. My brother is on the multimedia staff here. He was telling me a little bit about it. I was doing an internship with Cumulus over the summer so he knows I was kind of interested in media through that. He told me I should apply for the content staff so I did. Good decision! I like it a lot!

FH: Cool! So what do you do on content staff and how do you like it so far?
EF: My main job right now is doing Off the Mic interviews, which I actually really like because I love getting to know people. I think it’s interesting to see the different ways people react to your questions and answer them so I really like doing that. I haven’t done a lot of multimedia stuff so far but I’m looking to get more involved in that.

KJHK Ellie FehligFH: Nice, I love doing Off the Mic too! So since you’re involved with KJ, what kind of music do you like?
EF: I know this is a really cliché answer to this question but I like a lot of different types of music. I have to say that it starts with One Direction. I know it’s kind of bad to say. I also do like alternatives. I love The Shins. The Shins is like one of my top favorite band. I love old music, like Billy Joel. He’s also one of my favorites. Lately I’ve gotten really into 90’s rock. One of my favorite bands is actually Blink 182 because my brother listened to them when he was in elementary school so I just started listening to them too. And then that’s one of the bands that influenced a lot of my music taste now, besides One Direction.

FH: Cool, do you remember the first album you’ve ever bought?
EF:
I think the first album that my parents got me was in elementary school (for a birthday). I got Metamorphosis by Hilary Duff. I was obsessed with Lizzie McGuire and everything that has to do with Hilary Duff. I started freaking out when I got that album. It’s a pretty big deal. I don’t remember the first album I’ve bought by myself. Maybe it was Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits.

KJHK Ellie FehligFH: What kind of role does music play in your life?
EF: Honestly, music is a huge part of my life. I listen to music 24/7. I don’t understand people who can walk across campus not having headphones in. One time I left my headphone at my apartment and it was the worst day of my life. It was pretty hard. I feel like music is just one of those things that can’t really be defined. It means different things for different people but I guess for me, it’s just a way to alter your feelings toward certain things. It just makes you feel something.

FH: Uh-huh. I feel you. So is there any music or a specific song that impacted you in life?
EF:
There’ve been tons of songs that have impacted me actually. One of the first songs that impacted me, I don’t know why, is called “The Ballad of Billy the Kid” by Billy Joel. My dad had Billy Joel’s “Millennium Concert” album in his car and it was always in his car. So whenever I was in my dad’s car I would listen to it. I always turn it to CD two, track five. It’s “The Ballad of Billy the Kid.” I just loved how he clicks his tongue at the beginning to make the sound of a horse walking. Basically, any song that I listen to can influence me in some way, shape or form.

FH: What would you sing on karaoke night?
EF: I’m gonna go with Tempted by Squeeze. It’s a good one.

FH: What song best sums you up?
EF: Okay, I’m gonna get really cocky for a second and just say “Grow Almighty” by One Direction.

KJHK Ellie FehligFH: How do you feel about KJ so far and do you plan on staying at KJ?
EF:
First of all, yes I am going to hopefully be involved with KJ next semester and next year. It’s definitely helped me so far because it’s my first semester here at KU, so it helped me adapt. I’m the type of person that’s easily intimidated by people, and for some reason at KJHK, I’m not intimidated anymore. It’s like a very welcoming environment and everyone is super friendly. It’s helped me to realize how good of a choice I made to come to KU.

FH: If you could travel back in time, what time would you go to?
EF: As fascinated as I am about time, I’ve never even thought about that question. Probably sometime in the 80s. I feel like it’s the decade that everyone agrees is one of the best. I feel like everything is better back then, like the movies, music and stuff.

FH: Now let’s talk about the future. Where do you see yourself in five years?
EF: Hopefully graduated. I don’t know. I try not to think too much about the future because it just freaks me out.

FH: What’s the longest time you’ve gone without sleep and why?
EF: In high school, I was really involved with Relay for Life and that’s where you pull an all-nighter to benefit cancer patients.

KJHK Ellie FehligFH: I reported for that. It’s a great cause. What’s your biggest fear?
EF:
My simple answer to that is spiders. My complicated answer is being really old and not having achieved anything. Like, going through life and without influencing anyone or achieving anything.

FH: I feel you. So what do you want to do in life?
EF:
I want to influence people through forms of art in film. I want to entertain people the best I can and influence them and make them feel something.

FH: That’s awesome! Last question, what’s your favorite memory of KJHK so far?
EF: This interview has been pretty rad. Mom, I made it!
