McKinney to attend KU in spring
By Trevor Graff Charlie Weis announced Thursday that junior college defensive end Ty McKinney won’t be attending the University of Kansas until the spring semester. Weis discussed the matter with McKinney before deciding that any attempt to catch up academically in KU’s fall semester would be futile. “Ty has three years to play two,” Weis said. “This means when he enrolls in January, he would then have two years of eligibility to be played in two years. Ty intends to take extra classes at a junior college in preparation for January. Per Ty’s request, I will not respond to questions on this matter moving forward.” The Jayhawks play Rice Sat. at 2:3o in Memorial Stadium.
The Owls on paper
By Trevor Graff The Jayhawks opening performance in Memorial Stadium Sat. wasn’t perfect. Crist left a lot to be desired. The secondary gave up 174 yards to Austin Sumner in a little under a half of play – they also picked off four Sumner passes. But, for Coach Weis, this week on the practice fields is “utopic.” To Weis, there’s no better time to develop skill sets than after a sloppy win. The Jayhawks take this tone of improvement into this weekend’s home showdown with the Rice Owls. The Owls, led by sixth year coach David Bailiff, struggled with UCLA at home last week, losing 49-24 and surrendering 646 yards. Offense The offense,…
Bear Cave: Kansas Football Good and Bad in Opener
By Andrew Curtis As a coach, getting your team to perform the way you want them to in the first game of the season isn’t always realistic, especially when it’s the first game of your tenure. This was exactly the case Saturday night at Memorial Stadium, where Kansas prevailed 31-17 over South Dakota State. It was neither pretty nor ugly. We saw the Jayhawk offense put up 263 yards on the ground due mainly to the backfield combination of Tony Pierson and Taylor Cox. We also witnessed the defense providing a horrific flashback to the Turner Gill era, giving up a 99-yard touchdown run to the FCS Jackrabbits in the first quarter. KU also forced…
Jayhawks beat SDSU in Weis debut
By Trevor Graff The first game of the Charlie Weis era ended in a Jayhawk victory, but it began with a missed 35-yard Ron Doherty field goal. The Jackrabbits exploited the Jayhawks slow start. A 99-yard Zach Zenner touchdown run put South Dakota State ahead seven to nothing following Doherty’s missed attempt. Despite the slow start, the Jayhawks found a rhythm early in the second half. “The performance had its highs and lows, but as a coach this is utopia,” coach Charlie Weis said. “What’s going to happen is the guys are going to go out and enjoy themselves tonight, but on the flip side there will be so many things on the tape where…
Blau’s Two Cents: Season Preview
By: Alex Blau As the bells chime from the campanile and the sun starts to set tomorrow at Memorial Stadium there will be a new fresh smell in the air. The Jayhawks are going to be coming out of an NCAA worst 10 game loosing streak, including one conference win the past two years. To sum things up, the Kansas Jayhawk football program hit complete rock bottom the past two years. However, there is a new hope for the program and fans across the nation. This past offseason, Athletic director Sheahon Zenger hired former Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator Charlie Weis. Weis brings a new offense to the Jayhawks,…

Weis, team focused on Saturday’s opener
By Trevor Graff The 6-3 loss to North Dakota State on Sept. 4, 2010 and the slow start that followed remain on the minds of those surrounding Kansas Football. With league-mate South Dakota State coming to Memorial Stadium for the Sat. 6:00 p.m. season opener, coach Charlie Weis is confident in his team’s focus. “They’re well aware of it.” Weis said. “I live in the present and the future. I don’t really live in the past, but I think that bringing back moments from the past, both good and bad, are always good teaching points. I also could talk about a few years ago winning the Orange Bowl.” That focus on executing every play and…
Bear Cave: A New Era Begins
By Andrew Curtis It’s finally that time of year. Three things are inevitable: School is back in session, the leaves are beginning to change colors and the Kansas football program is set to begin its 123rd season. It’s safe to say that the Jayhawks enter the 2012 season with the most optimism since 2009, when Mark Mangino was still at the helm. The Turner Gill era was, well, if you want to call it an era, nothing short of abysmal. In my first three years at KU, the football team managed to get embarrassingly worse. A program that had won an Orange Bowl just a couple years before managed to just 10 wins in 3…
Gridiron Gesticulations: 2012 Expectations
by John Griffin Like a tidal wave of sweaty, manly, American goodness, college football season descends upon us, determined to sweep us away in a torrent of fandom, hype, and greasy stadium nachos. Before the season officially kicks off this Thursday , here are a few things to expect this year: 1. The Jayhawks will be improved. Don’t expect any miraculous turnarounds, but Charlie Weis should be a great hire for KU. The talent and knowledge of the system will take time to solidify, but the Jayhawks’ scoring attack should be reinvigorated under Weis, who has a track record of success with almost every offense he’s run. 2. Steve Spurrier will throw things. Spurrier throwing his…
