Folk musician and composer Omar Faruk Tekbilek will celebrate Turkey’s rich heritage with the mesmerizing sounds of Sufi and Middle Eastern melodies. Tekbilek’s music is rooted in tradition, but has been influenced by contemporary sounds. His work transcends political boundaries while maintaining traditional sensibilities in a way few artists can manage. Like Tekbilek himself, his music symbolizes diversity in unity. Tekbilek is the recipient of the Best Artist of the Turkish Music Award 2003 from the Turkish Writers Association.
Tekbilek’s music expertise started as a young boy in his uncle’s music shop in Adana, Turkey, where he mastered folk instruments. At the age of 12 he began playing in local clubs, then moved to Istanbul where he started recording with some of Turkey’s top musicians. He studied Arabesque and Western musical styles but was most influenced by Mevlevi Dervishes, Turkey’s ancient Sufi order.
