SUMMARY:Environmental Studies
DESCRIPTION:For 4 consecutive Wednesdays this Fall\, the Center for Global and International Studies has partnered with academic departments at KU and the Spencer Museum of Art to present films that shed light on global responses to environmental issues. Guest speakers and panel discussions accompany the screenings. Manufactured Landscapes\, 10.10.2012 Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky posits that manmade landscapes define us. He sees a certain physical beauty in the order and symmetry of some of these landscapes\, despite troubling reasons for their existence and the subsequent degradation they pose to the environment. Cameras follow Burtynsky as he visits what he calls manufactured landscapes: slag heaps\, e-waste dumps\, huge factories in the Fujian and Zhejiang provinces of China. This installment of the Environmental Film Festival is presented by the Center for East Asian Studies.

SUMMARY:Environmental Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:For 4 consecutive Wednesdays this Fall\, the Center for Global and International Studies has partnered with academic departments at KU and the Spencer Museum of Art to present films that shed light on global responses to environmental issues. Guest speakers and panel discussions accompany the screenings. The Island President\, 10.3.2012 After ending 30 years of despotic rule by bringing democracy to the Maldives\, President Mohamed Nasheed now confronts the survival of his country and its people. The Maldives is one of the most low-lying countries in the world. A rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable. A panel discussion follows the screening. This installment of the Environmental Film Festival is presented by the Center for Global & International Studies. Guest speakers and panel discussions accompany the screenings. Waste Land\, 9.26.2012 Filmed over nearly three years\, Waste Land allows artist Vik Muniz as he journeys to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump\, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There\, he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Both the dignity and despair of the catadores is revealed as they begin to re-imagine their lives. SUMMARY:Fluid Fracture: a multimedia experience
DESCRIPTION:For their second gallery event Black House Collective invited 5 composers to write 15 minutes of music expressing their unique compositional points of view. This performance will showcase the work of up and coming Kansas City composers John Chittum\, Cody Kauhl\, Peter Lawless\, Hunter Long\, and Russell Thorpe. In collaboration with the performance\, visual artist Jeff Tackett offers immersive visuals inspired by ice stalactites which form in the sea - beautiful\, but ultimately deadly as they encase any budding signs of life. This ice structure concept moved the participating composers to consider themes of translucence\, liquid depth\, and cold as they composed their pieces amidst the summer heat. In this sense\, the music is about aspiration and contradiction.

SUMMARY:Chop Chop - Matt Jacobs and Lee Piechocki
DESCRIPTION:Wonderfair presents Chop Chop through March 25 at the following times: Sunday: 12:00pm Wednesday: 12:00pm Thursday: 12:00pm Friday: 12:00pm Saturday: 10:00am Chop chop\, get to work. Chop chop\, make some art. For many talented artists “chop chop” is both an internal mantra and an incessant external fact. Moreover it describes the way in which art is often made\, in chops: a second stolen during a commute\, an inspiration set in motion at an inopportune moment captured as note to self in one’s sketchbook. Beginning Final Friday\, February 24th\, Wonder Fair presents Chop Chop\, an exhibition of momentary pauses in modern man’s hectic schedule. The show pairs former Wonder-Fairian Lee Piechocki with Kansas City Art Institute grad Matt Jacobs. Art brothers from different art mothers\, their work is united by an obvious delight in materials and pop- toned banality. As if they shopped for art imagery from the same neon-colored aisle at the dollar store\, Jacobs’ sculptures juxtapose bright pool floats and rainbow-hued household cleaning supplies\, while Piechocki’s imaginary interiors are filled with beach balls\, kitsch dolphin posters\, and stray fluorescent marks. Chop Chop promises to be a bright spot in the deep of winter-- so Chop chop\, go to the Wonder Fair!

SUMMARY:"Objectified" screening
DESCRIPTION:This spring semester\, the University of Kansas School of Architecture\, Design and Planning presents a design film trilogy by Gary Hustwit\, that shows us how design shapes the world around us. The trilogy begins with Gary Hustwit’s directorial debut documentary\, "Helvetica" on February 6th. Helvetica explores the worlds of typography and graphic design through the eyes of one loved/hated ubiquitous little font. As a filmmaker\, Gary Hustwit “likes the idea of taking a closer look at the things we take for granted and changing the way people think about them\, whether it’s type or objects or whatever”. His second feature\, "Objectified" on March 6th\, looks at industrial & product design\, and our relationship with the manufactured objects that surround us. His brand new documentary and last installment in the design trilogy\, "Urbanized" on April 9th \, focuses on the creation of cities and asks the world's leading architects\, planners\, policymakers\, builders and thinkers to discuss the issues and strategies behind cities. Hustwit explains\, “I had the first ideas for Urbanized in 2007\, when I traveled to over 100 cities for the screening tour for Helvetica. I hadn’t planned on making a series of films about design\, but after making Helvetica\, I was thinking a lot about all the ways design affects our daily lives. This led to the second film in the trilogy\, Objectified\, about manufactured objects and industrial design. But the design of our cities struck me as the area of design that had the most impact on our lives. Where we live\, how we get around\, where we work\, how we relax\, what opportunities we’re afforded; the physical design of the city dictates all of these factors.” Each film will be shown at 7pm in Woodruff Auditorum in the Kansas Union on the campus of the University of Kansas. All are free & open to the public. The last film in the series\, Urbanized\, will feature a Q&A with Hustwit.

SUMMARY:Moveable Type Truck
DESCRIPTION:Wonder Fair welcomes Kyle Durrie's Moveable Type Truck What is moveable type? Literally\, it is the system of printing that uses moveable pieces of type—individual letters\, numbers\, and characters—to reproduce the elements of a document. Invented in China but popularized by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440\, moveable type was like the internet for the 15th century\, allowing widespread reproduction of materials like books\, announcements\, and advertising. In this instance\, however\, Moveable Type is a fully functional letterpress print shop built into the back of a converted 1982 Chevy step van. Type truck creator and resident artist Kyle Durrie is in the midst of a ten month cross-country adventure\, driving from town to town and spreading the good word about printing the old fashioned way. Moveable Type will be setting up shop at Wonder Fair on Wednesday\, March 7th from 5 to 8 pm for an evening of printing demos\, studio/truck tours\, and tall tales about life on the road. This event will be free and open to the public\, and participants can expect to get their hands dirty and make a print to take home with them.

SUMMARY:THE ARTICULATE BODY: Jennifer Crupi Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception January 27 | 7 to 9 p.m. The artwork in this exhibition addresses the ways we communicate with each other visually\, through body language. Hand crafted of aluminum or sterling silver\, these interactive objects become instruments for gestural behavior. Studies show that 85% of our communication is non-verbal. With the increasing use of e-mail\, Internet social networks\, and text messaging\, true one-on-one interpersonal communication is fading and our more honest and authentic feelings are being overlooked. All of my pieces point out various gestures or postures and their associated meanings in the hope viewers will realize the importance of how our bodies speak for us. An old proverb rightfully claims\, “actions speak louder than words”. Although our body movements may be mute to the ears\, they are inevitably far more revealing than the spoken word which often disguises.

SUMMARY:HAYWIRE: Hong Chun Zhang Opening Reception at Lawrence Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:“Hay Wire” is a site specific project made for the Lawrence Arts Center. This body of new work includes one large charcoal drawing\, two oil paintings and three Chinese ink paintings as well as one installation piece. The idea for this series comes from my life experiences both in urban China and rural Kansas. I mix my Chinese heritage\, aesthetics\, and identity with my new home in the mid-west and in middle kingdom. The horizontal charcoal drawing “Prairie Waves” is attached with two rolled out hay bales at the ends that are similar to the wooden dowels and the format of a traditional Chinese scroll painting. This piece (3f x 20f) is hung on one side of the wall in the bigger gallery and the image of hair looks like the waves of prairie grass from a distance. The three Chinese ink paintings “Flint Hairs” are hung side by side on the opposite wall in the same gallery. Each painting is 2ft x 6ft with a horizontal composition. From a distance\, the images looks like Kansas Flint Hills\, once you get closer\, you will see the landscape covered with fine details of hair. Each piece is little different from the other. They can stand alone as three individual pieces and can be viewed as one group. This series is the mixture of Kansas concept and the beauty of Chinese fine style ink painting medium. There are two oil paintings “Hair” and “Hay” (5f x 5f each) hanging in the back of the same gallery. I want to show the difference and the similarity between the two paintings in terms of composition\, color and imagery. The bigger gallery (my Kansas room) represents the open space and the flow of the Kansas landscape. The installation piece in the smaller gallery (my China room)\, however\, reveals the sometimes claustrophobic and chaotic aspects of Chinese urbanization. The massive electric wires are placed sporadically on the wall and connected to the telephone poles at the corners. Two charcoal drawings of vanishing electric poles are painted directly on the ends of the opposite walls. Therefore\, the viewers feel like they can walk into the work itself as the pole lined road continues. The cluttered and massive amount of commercial advertizing and posters are found on most bill boards\, available wall spaces as well as power and telephone poles. These are very real aspects of Chinese city life. I attempt to replicate this part of urban development by putting up Chinese posters and advertisements on the electric poles and scatted on the gallery floor. I want the viewers to experience this overwhelmed and semi-controlled Chinese urban environment in the smaller gallery space.

DESCRIPTION:Ecumenical Christian Ministries presents the Lawrence Fair Trade Holiday Market on November 28 at 11:00 a.m. Lawrence Fair Trade will be celebrating a landmark with its 20th annual Fair Trade Holiday Market this November and December! Since 1991\, this event has consistently expanded\, becoming one of Lawrence’s favorite places to find a growing array of unique holiday gifts whose purchase supports disadvantaged artisans here and around the world. The Fair Trade Holiday Market will feature fairly traded handcrafts\, apparel\, chocolate\, dry goods\, toys\, and much more.Vendors at the sale this year include Equal Exchange\, A Greater Gift\, Ten Thousand Villages\, Women’s Bean Project and local businesses such as Two Hands Worldshop\, First Weavers and Silver Condor Jewelry. The market will also feature crafts from Lawrence’s sister city El Pappaturro in El Salvador. Donations can be given in a person’s name as an alternative gift to organizations such as Heifer Project and Oxfam Unwrapped. The high quality crafts\, textiles and clothing sold at the sale are handmade by artisans from 35 countries around the world\, including underprivileged parts of the U.S. Fair Trade is an alternative to conventional trade that takes measures to ensure products are produced in safe and healthy working conditions and that artisans maintain control of their businesses through cooperatives. Artisan cooperatives often choose to devote a large percentage of their profits to community development projects including schools\, hospitals and other important infrastructure. Fair Trade also takes steps to establish sustainable methods of production. This innovative triple bottom line approach respects People\, Planet and Profit as opposed to conventional trade where profit alone rules but often fails to provide incentive to respect the people producing goods and the planet providing the resources. November 25th & 26th\, and December 3rd\, from 10 am to 5 pm\, local massage therapists will offer chair massages on the main level of the ECM\, for a small donation to benefit Elevate Africa. Local organizations will also offer tasty treats on the weekends to raise funds for their causes. Additional dates Friday\, November 25 Saturday\, November 26 Sunday\, November 27 Tuesday\, November 29 Wednesday\, November 30

SUMMARY:Never Make it Home-Kirk Rundstrom's Final Tour Documentary screening
DESCRIPTION: NEVER MAKE IT HOME at Liberty Hall Kirk Rundstrom’s Final Tour A feature documentary Directed by G.J. Echternkamp Running Time: 76min “To stop playing is to start dying.” Synopsis: After ten years of constant touring and four critically acclaimed albums under their belt\, Wichita “insurgent country” band Split Lip Rayfield had built up a dedicated legion of fans throughout the nation\, most notably across the Midwest and in their home state of Kansas. With their lively combo of guitar\, mandolin\, banjo\, gas-tank bass\, multi-part harmonies\, and singing often bordering on screaming\, Split Lip’s music defied genres—too raucous to be bluegrass\, too acoustic to be rock ‘n’ roll\, and too melodic to be punk. Things were particularly taking off for Kirk Rundstrom\, the electric\, hell-raising singer/guitarist for Split Lip\, who was playing in no less than three bands and booked around 100 shows for 2006. Kirk had battled with drug addiction most of his life\, but had become sober two years earlier\, making a vow to be there for his two young daughters. But early that year Kirk got medical attention for throat pain and was shockingly diagnosed with esophageal cancer. The doctors gave him two months to live. Split Lip Rayfield canceled shows around the world\, as Kirk was treated aggressive chemotherapy\, which would serve to extend his life\, but not stop the cancer. NEVER MAKE IT HOME is the inspiring story of what he chose to do next. Set across America’s heartland\, this moving documentary captures the rowdy\, heart-wrenching\, and ultimately joyous performances of Kirk Rundstrom’s “Final Tour” where each show was played as it would be the last.

SUMMARY:Maxx Stevens Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Lawrence Arts Center to view the Maxx Stevens exhibition Oct. 7 through Nov. 26. A reception will be held on Nov. 26 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Maxx Stevens lives in Boulder Colorado and is on the faculty at the University of Colorado. From the artist: Dichotomy of place in contemporary Native life involves an ongoing dialog about how Native people strive to live in a modern society while surviving daily modifications. Food consumption has changed the world and\, with that\, the Native community. Members of the Native community suffer as a result of eating commercially produced foods and losing their connection with traditional plants. The installation Sugar Heaven is a reflection on this crisis. The Lawrence Arts Center is open to the public: Sunday 9:00am - 5:00pm Monday 9:00am - 9:00pm Tuesday 9:00am - 9:00pm Wednesday 9:00am - 9:00pm Thursday 9:00am - 9:00pm Friday 9:00am - 9:00pm Saturday 9:00am - 9:00pm
