In Mark Twain Tonight!, Tony and Emmy Award-winning Hal Holbrook brings the famous author to life in an often comic, dramatic recitation of his writings. Holbrook began performing as Twain in 1954. In 1966, his second New York engagement won a Tony Award and a Drama Critics’ Circle Award followed by a CBS television special.

It all began as an honor’s project, focusing on Mark Twain at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. It has since turned into a beloved stage performance. Holbrook continues to perfect this performance, drawing upon his vast experience on the stage and screen. He has no set program — he chooses material as he goes along. There is an emphasis on Twain’s comedic material, and Holbrook always includes an excerpt from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Holbrook has since written two books about playing Mark Twain, the first was in 1968, entitled Mark Twain Tonight! An Actor’s Portrait and the second in 2011, titled Harold: The Boy Who Became Mark Twain.

Most famous (or infamous) for the bawdy, satirical comedy/variety romp the Victor Continental Show, this February serves as the launching point for Card Table’s biggest and boldest season in years! Presented by Lawrence Arts Center at 8:00 p.m.

In the ten years since its premiere in Lawrence, Literary Canon Fodder has been performed at the Edinburgh (Scotland) Fringe Festival, and after its publication in 2004, at Universities, Colleges, and High Schools throughout the United States. This “Revival” features long time Lawrence actors Kari Jackson and Jerry Mitchell (Mitchell revisiting the role he created.) The rapid fire delivery in addition to the multiple characters demanded by the script, serve as a “tour de force” for comics with the talents of Mitchell and Jackson. Literary Canon Fodder is directed by Jeremy Auman with assistance by Jacqueline Grunau (also reprising their original roles) The Script by Will Averill incorporates all manner of comic devices from a hip-hop retelling of Homer, to a live action anime version of Hemingway.

“…It appears that Will Averill had a lot of fun writing this play…”-Edinburgh Fringe review.
Performances: Friday, Saturday, February 17, 18 in The Black Box at Lawrence Arts Center 940 New Hampshire Tickets are $7 on sale now at the LAC Box office Phone 843-2787
