A conversation about the Panorama’s condition, conservation and history Join us for a conversation about the Panorama with special guests Ronald Harvey and Bill Sharp. Ronald Harvey of Tuckerbrook Associates will be at the KU Natural History Museum this spring to lead a conservation assessment of the animals of the Panorama, as well as their environment. Bill Sharp is co-author of The Dashing Kansan, the biography about the Panorama’s creator, Lewis Lindsay Dyche.

The distinguished biologist Ernst Mayr suggested that we might better understand the complex evolutionary theory of Charles Darwin if we break it into five distinct theories, each with its own history and degree of acceptance. Join us at Free State Brewing Company for a conversation about these five theories and how dividing Darwin’s insights this way can help isolate unscientific criticisms of evolutionary theory.

More than 8,500 plant species are found in an area of South Africa that is less than .04 percent of the world’s land surface – so many that it is designated one of the world’s six floral kingdoms by itself. For the this Science on Tap, Botanist Mark Mort will lead a discussion about the amazing plant life of this region, how it evolved to be so diverse and threats to its survival.

These stories provide concrete, emotionally and intellectually satisfying paths toward making sense of living in a world of ever-increasing change. For this Science on Tap, Chris McKitterick, director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction, will lead a discussion about the ways that science fiction provides our new myths and teaches us how to survive and remain sane in a changing age.
