SUMMARY:The Bump and Hustle
DESCRIPTION: The Bump and Hustle has been one of Lawrence's finest parties since its inception almost 3 years ago. When we created this gig back in May 2010 we had little idea exactly what we were getting into\, all we knew was that snobby soul parties were getting stale and that the EDM/Macbook aesthetic wasn't for us either. Over time this night became OUR thing and thrived in bridging the gap between dubstep's intensity and the soul scene's taste. We worked on our turntable chops\, we played rare records and common records\, and\, above all else\, we danced our blues away. Back then it was just a feeling but now it's something way more palatable: join us this weekend as we get-down for the last time with Cyrus D on the 1s & 2s\, join us this weekend as we bid winter adieu and embrace the good times to come this spring. soundcloud ... The Bump & Hustle serves to showcase the finest sounds of the 1970s and early 1980s. Polished 70s soul sides and smooth disco anthems of yore made for the first brand of club music as we now know it\, we celebrate the old that made the new possible: classy steppers\, lavish grooves\, rich production\, and heartfelt vocals are what we're all about. We'll even mix in some contemporary records just to keep things relevant so stop on by cause we're all about having a good time.

SUMMARY:"One Wild and Precious Life"
DESCRIPTION:The Jayhawk Initiative for Student Theatre is proud to present "One Wild and Precious Life" Feb. 22-24 at the Lawrence Arts Center. In the last century\, the average American life expectancy has increased by 30 years. Good news...right? Are you sure you want to live that long? What do you do with all that extra time? This devised performance\, born out of an honors capstone on the life course\, seeks to answer those questions. Through adaptations of the short stories of Grace Paley\, interviews with Lawrence seniors\, and personal narrative\, "One Wild and Precious Life" explores how art can help us reimagine the life course and make the best of our one wild and precious life.

SUMMARY:Ragamala Dance, Sacred Earth
DESCRIPTION:Ragamala Dance brings the sensibility of mysticism and sanctity of the 2\,000-year-old Indian dance form\, bharatanatyam\, to the contemporary stage. By interfacing choreography with live Indian music and the visual traditions of kolams and Warli paintings\, Sacred Earth celebrates body and nature\, and soul and earth. The choreographers use visual traditions to explore the interconnectedness between humans and the landscapes that shape them. The evening builds from silent\, meditative beginnings to a thrilling crescendo as the performers surrender to the beauty of this sacred earth that has been given to us to safeguard\, cherish and pass on to our future generations.

SUMMARY:John Lithgow, Stories by Heart
DESCRIPTION:In Stories by Heart\, actor John Lithgow offers a touching and humorous reflection on storytelling as the tie that binds humanity. Invoking memories of his father and his grandmother\, Lithgow traces his roots as an actor and storyteller\, interspersing his own story with two great stories that were read to him and his siblings when they were children. In the first story\, Lithgow portrays ten distinct\, outrageous characters including a parrot. By contrast\, the second story is a dark and comic look at Midwestern American implacability. Stories by Heart provides evidence of the power of storytelling\, the magic of theatre and the talents of one of this generation's greatest actors. As an actor\, Lithgow has done it all — beginning on the stage\, he later moved to the big screen and television. He has been nominated for every major industry award and has won Tony\, Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for his work. Lithgow starred in TV's 3rd Rock from the Sun\, was featured as the voice of Lord Farquaad in Shrek and\, more recently\, guest-starred in Showtime's Dexter.

SUMMARY:"The Magic Flute"
DESCRIPTION:KU Opera presents: The Tale of Die Zauberflote: An Allegory Adapted from Mozart LAWRENCE-What if a group of people thrown together in a truly hopeless and desperate situation decided to console and encourage each other by acting out a story that pits hope against despair? What if that story was Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute? KU Opera will challenge audiences with this alternative presentation of The Magic Flute\, January 27-30\, in the William Inge Theatre/Murphy Hall\, 7:30pm. The storytellers in this adaptation are prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp. The story will use psychological elements of Mozart’s famous opera\, but this presentation will move beyond the conventional fairy tale setting into a more intimate\, allegorical realm. “I am very excited about this presentation\,” said Mark Ferrell\, Musical Director of KU Opera. “Our singers are being challenged in new ways beyond the expected musical challenges. Many are working in an entirely new theatrical way; discoveries are being made every day.” Ferrell adds that the audience will also be challenged in new ways as they will take on the role of a “second circle” of storytellers\, invited into the concentration camp barrack and asked to imagine\, along with the performers/prisoners\, how they would deal with the same life issues. Tickets to this opera are $10/general admission and $5/students and seniors and can be purchased by calling 785-864-3436. The opera runs January 27-30 at 7:30pm. This production is not recommended for young audiences.
