SUMMARY:KJHK presents: Greensky Bluegrass/Chicago Farmer
DESCRIPTION:If you’re familiar with bluegrass music\, then you’re tuned in to some of what Greensky Bluegrass does. They’re also known to throw a great party\, rock n roll\, and (if the critics are to be believed) they have great songs. They are unquestionably a team of friends that traverse the country making music they enjoy. What makes Greensky different than Bluegrass? Poignant rural ballads about real people? Dobro tone that Jerry (Douglas or Garcia) would love? Distortion Pedals? Grit and attitude from a whiskey soaked card game? Indeed\, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Chicago Farmer Cody is a folk-singer’s folk-singer and a poet’s poet. He was born and bred in Delavan IL\, population 25\, surrounded by the endless skies of the American Midwest. Before moving to Chicago in 2003\, Cody tried his hand at sessions in Nashville and carefully hewed and tested his art in college town bars and honky-tonks around the Midwest. He now plays regularly in the city and it’s not uncommon to see whole rooms full of strangers erupt and sing along to the choruses of his songs on their first listen (I’ve seen it happen). Cody’s voice is powerful and gritty\, emotionally piercing while subtly imbuing additional layers of meaning and poignancy in his lyrical delivery. His song-writing is deeply rooted in the American Folk tradition and all of its grit but with a post Dylan sense of wit\, perspicacity and that certain savior-faire. He didn’t go to college but he drank all of their beer.

SUMMARY:John Lithgow, Stories by Heart
DESCRIPTION:In Stories by Heart\, actor John Lithgow offers a touching and humorous reflection on storytelling as the tie that binds humanity. Invoking memories of his father and his grandmother\, Lithgow traces his roots as an actor and storyteller\, interspersing his own story with two great stories that were read to him and his siblings when they were children. In the first story\, Lithgow portrays ten distinct\, outrageous characters including a parrot. By contrast\, the second story is a dark and comic look at Midwestern American implacability. Stories by Heart provides evidence of the power of storytelling\, the magic of theatre and the talents of one of this generation's greatest actors. As an actor\, Lithgow has done it all — beginning on the stage\, he later moved to the big screen and television. He has been nominated for every major industry award and has won Tony\, Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for his work. Lithgow starred in TV's 3rd Rock from the Sun\, was featured as the voice of Lord Farquaad in Shrek and\, more recently\, guest-starred in Showtime's Dexter.

SUMMARY:Death Cab For Cutie, Maps & Atlases
DESCRIPTION:Maps and Atlases offer songs that wrestle themselves from flailing\, algebraic fits of spazzy guitar notes and drum ruptures to lulling\, voice-driven melodies that speak stories using lyrical images strung together like soup cans chasing a Cadillac. Maps and Atlases create a distinctive blend of the intricate and organic.

SUMMARY:Dark Star Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Performing to critical acclaim worldwide for over 13 years and more than 1800 shows\, Dark Star Orchestra continues the Grateful Dead concert experience. Their shows are built off the Dead’s extensive catalog and the talent of these 7 fine musicians. On any given night the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead's 30 years of extensive touring or use their catalog to program a unique set list for the show. This allows fans both young and old to share in the experience. By recreating set lists from the past\, and by developing their own sets of Dead songs\, Dark Star Orchestra offers a continually evolving artistic outlet within this musical canon. Honoring both the band and the fans\, Dark Star Orchestra’s members seek out the unique style and sound of each era while simultaneously offering their own informed improvisations. Dark Star Orchestra offers much more than the sound of the Grateful Dead\, they truly encapsulate the energy and the experience. It's about a sense of familiarity. It's about a feeling that grabs listeners and takes over. It's about a contagious energy\, ... in short\, it's about the complete experience and consistent quality show that the fan receives when attending a Dark Star Orchestra show. Dark Star Orchestra has performed throughout the United States and Europe. They continue to grow their fan base by playing at larger venues for two and even three nightstands as well as performing at major music festivals including Bonnaroo\, All Good Festival\, Gathering of the Vibes\, Mountain Jam\, Summer Camp\, Wakarusa and 10\,000 Lakes. In addition\, Dark Star Orchestra hosts its own annual gathering\, Gratefulfest\, where they headline three nights and are joined by a mix of established and up and coming national touring acts. Fans and critics haven’t been the only people caught up in the spirit of a Dark Star show. The band has featured guest performances from original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir\, Bill Kreutzmann\, Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay\, Vince Welnick\, Tom Constanten and even toured with longtime Dead soundman\, Dan Healy. Other notable guests have included Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman of Phish\, Keller Williams\, Warren Haynes\, Steve Kimock\, Peter Rowan\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and many more… "For us it's a chance to recreate some of the magic that was created for us over the years\," rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rob Eaton explains. "We offer a sort of a historical perspective at what it might have been like to go to a show in 1985\, 1978 or whenever. Even for Deadheads who can say they've been to a hundred shows in the 90s\, we offer something they never got to see live."

SUMMARY:Dawes, William Elliott Whitmore, Quiet Corral
DESCRIPTION:Dawes is an American rock band from Los Angeles\, California\, composed of brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith\, along with Wylie Gelber and Tay Strathairn. Dawes was formed from the band Simon Dawes after the departure of co-songwriter Blake Mills\,[1] subsequently abandoning a post-punk sound in favor of folk rock. Dawes is part of the Laurel Canyon sound\, which often cites influences such as Crosby\, Stills\, and Nash and Neil Young\, among others.[2] At the invitation of producer Jonathan Wilson\, the band joined a local informal jam session that included Conor Oberst\, The Black Crowes's Chris Robinson\, and Benmont Tench.[3] The band recorded their debut album\, North Hills\, in Laurel Canyon in a live setting to analog tape\,[2] resulting in a sound that Rolling Stone magazine called "authentically vintage".[4] Wilco multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone is also credited with appearing on the release.[5]

SUMMARY:Reverend Horton Heat, Lucero, Mountain Sprout
DESCRIPTION:It’s true that the Reverend Horton Heat have been called a great many things over the course of their storied career: Perpetual Carriers Of The Rockabilly Flame\, Genre-Shattering Problem Children\, Filthy Drunks\, and The Most Electrifying Live Act In America (150 shows every year can’t be wrong). But whatever you happen to call them\, their country-flavored punkabilly and onstage antics have brought the Reverend Horton Heat a strikingly diverse fan base and a devoted cult following. The Rev himself\, aka Jim Heath\, leads the way with signature guitar riffs\, while pounding out the bottom notes (often on top of) his upright bass is Jimbo Wallace\, while Scott Churilla keeps time on the drums.

SUMMARY:Split Lip Rayfield, Bright Light Social Hour, Red Eye Gravy
DESCRIPTION:Pipeline Productions presents Split Lip Rayfield with Bright Light Social Hour and Red Eye Gravy at The Bottleneck on April 7. The fire rages on for the powerhouse trio from Kansas\, Split Lip Rayfield (SLR)\, as they celebrate the release of their new record\, "I’ll Be Around." The new album showcases the songwriting talents of mandolin player Wayne Gottstine and banjo player Eric Mardis\, tied together by the harmony and deep-bass licks of Jeff Eaton. Such songs as "Aces High\," "Heart of Darkness\," and "The High Price of Necromancy" will take listeners on a journey of love\, loss\, change\, and dark powers\, as they discover what lies in the mysterious minds of SLR. The song for which the album is named\, "I’ll Be Around\," serves as a tribute to the band’s fallen teammate Kirk Rundstrom\, whose influence on the band and its path was great. Rundstrom’s legacy continues to live on in thenew album and also the band itself as every live show is dedicated to his memory. Split Lip Rayfield has carved out their own genre of music with their unique sound and instrumentation. Often described as a mix of bluegrass and country with an accent of metal\, no other band delivers the experience of the homemade gas-tank bass played by Jeff Eaton\, sets the mandolin strings on fire like Wayne Gottstine\, or makes the banjo sing like Eric Mardis. Together\, they burn up speakers and stages alike providing an unforgettable experience. This is one trio not to miss! For more information about the new Split Lip Rayfield album\, "I’ll Be Around\," or live shows\, please visit their website at www.splitliprayfield.com.

SUMMARY:Yonder Mountain String Band, Brown Bird
DESCRIPTION:Pipeline Productions presents Yonder Mountain String Band with Brown Bird at Liberty Hall on March 29. If Yonder Mountain String Band’s fourth studio album and self-titled debut for Vanguard Records sounds a little different\, well\, it should. It marks the first time the burgeoning progressive string band has worked with a stellar rock producer—Tom Rothrock (Foo Fighters\, Elliott Smith\, Beck and James Blunt—it’s the first time they’ve added a little drums to their mix of banjo/bass/mandolin/guitar and it’s the first time they’ve written almost an entire album spontaneously. Yonder Mountain String Band catches them transitioning into more folk and rock territories and most certainly and ceremoniously exploring different sounds and ways of songwriting. Previously\, guitarist Adam Aijala\, mandolinist Jeff Austin\, banjo player Dave Johnston and bassist Ben Kaufmann would each show up to the studio with their own songs\, or songs that had already been worked up on the road. But with Rothrock behind the boards\, they sat around and came up with songs that stirred the band’s creative juices in a new way. “It definitely was the challenge that was ready to be taken on\,” says Austin. “For me\, it was a very necessary step that the band had to take\, just because we’ve always been about letting ourselves experiment to the full width of the spectrum. It was a part of us that was just dying to come out.” Under Rothrock’s leadership\, Aijala added electric guitar to the album\, while Austin\, milked an old ‘70s amplifier for feedback with an acoustic mandolin. Ambient noise accompanies the disc-ending “Wind’s On Fire.” The cinematic instrumental “Midwest Gospel Radio” was born out of Rothrock’s request for a spiritual number. Says Aijala\, “Tom’s input certainly gave the songs a new and interesting feel.” On the upbeat\, rousing\, first single “How ‘Bout You?” and “Classic Situation\,” the band also brought into the fold Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas\, who changed the sensibility of the record\, says Ben. “All of a sudden\, our perspective got a little broader. His drumming shows up fundamentally and very subtly in places throughout the record. I’ll leave that up to the listener to find these. We ended up with an album that’s got rippin’ bluegrass on it\, but approached in a non-traditional way\, which really appeals to me because we are not a traditional band. It’s always been forward-thinking and this is the first time we’ve captured that in the studio." As a result\, the always progressive Yonder Mountain continues to close the gap between bluegrass and rock: With its dueling electric guitar/banjo solo section\, “How ‘Bout You?” has the goods to turn people on to a new way of thinking about how a banjo can be played. “There are places where the banjo and the mandolin become rock instruments\,” says Kaufmann. “Angel\,” meanwhile\, could be dubbed “hard-folk” “That’s a song where we draw from personal influences that bridge—for us—our love of heavier rock music\, with lyrical imagery that’s clearly traditional\,” Kaufmann continues. “There’s a fiddle in the solo section\, but it’s clearly channeling the spirits of the rock guitar gods.” Fusing traditional elements and modern techniques\, the disc’s leadoff cut\, “Sidewalk Stars\,” appropriately and perfectly captures the spirit of Yonder Mountain on this album. A few of the tracks were worked up live\, and a few come from outside sources. “I Ain’t Been Myself in Years” was written by band friend Benny Galloway\, and “East Nashville Easter” was penned by Austin and lauded singer/songwriter Todd Snider. And it’s in songs like the latter where the band’s experimentations make even more sense. Twisting and bending their sound with a rock producer was a natural next step for a group of guys who actually grew up on rock music. Comprised of Colorado transplants that grew up in the Midwest or Northeast\, none of the band members had backgrounds in bluegrass music\, but rather discovered it through old and new records and fellow musicians during college. But it was indeed their new and growing love for bluegrass that quite unexpectedly brought the four players together during a free-for-all jam session at The Verve\, a bar outside of Boulder\, in 1998. Once they met\, they knew they were onto something. “It was an eye-opening experience because we heard a unique sound\,” says Johnston. “Something coalesced that night.” Emphasizing song craft and unafraid to push its boundaries\, things began snowballing quickly. In 1999\, the band debuted with Elevation\, produced by Grammy-winning dobro player Sally Van Meter and released (like each of its previous studio discs) on their own Frog Pad Records. Yonder Mountain returned in 2001 with Town by Town\, helmed by Grammy Award winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist\, Tim O’Brien. Van Meter was back behind the boards for the 2003 set Old Hands\, a concept album of sorts that featured the songwriting of Benny “Burle” Galloway. Featured on the evocative tunes about cowboys\, miners and all sorts of hard-livin’ Western folk were O’Brien\, lauded fiddleman Darol Anger (Bela Fleck\, David Grisman Quintet\, Vassar Clements) and dobro player Jerry Douglas (Alison Krauss\, Emmylou Harris). In between those studio discs\, the band released Mountain Tracks Volume 1-IV\, issued on Frog Pad Records\, and each capturing the energy of its increasingly popular live shows. With little radio support\, Yonder Mountain has become one of the fastest rising touring bands in the country\, its fanbase having ballooned over the past five years through steady gigging and high-profile festival sets\, all of which are full of improv and none of which feature the same set list. “Now that we’re maturing as performers\, our improvisation is more beholden to playing with good tone\, good feel\, good timing\,” says Johnston. It can’t be understated just what the band has achieved with that untraditional banjo/bass/mandolin/guitar line-up. Using bluegrass as its bedrock\, the band has grown like few rock bands even do these days. “It’s funny\,” says Austin. “But now we’re playing before 4\,000 people in Denver. Last year\, we played before 700 people in Atlanta and we recently sold-out a 3\,000 seat venue there!” Added Kaufman\, “ I think there’s just something about the banjo that makes people feel good.” “[This album] probably represents us more than any other record we’ve done\,” states Aijala\, “because it incorporates more of our musical influences than ever before. It’s a really cool thing to be a part of and I’ll never take for granted just how lucky we are to do what we do. It makes me more excited for the future.”

SUMMARY:Galactic, Corey Glover, Corey Henry, Orgone
DESCRIPTION:Pipeline Productions presents Galactic\, Corey Glover\, Corey Henry\, and Orgone at Liberty Hall on March 15 at 7:00 p.m. With the release of their sixth album\, From the Corner to the Block\, the five-man group GALACTIC - drummer Stanton Moore\, bassist Robert Mercurio\, saxophonist/harmonica player Ben Ellman\, keyboardist Richard Vogel\, and guitarist Jeff Raines - reaffirms their standing as one of the funkiest outfits in the known universe. Featuring a cherry-picked guest list of some of hip-hop's most dynamic lyricists - including Juvenile\, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious)\, Lyrics Born\, Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets)\, Mr. Lif\, Chali 2na (Jurrasic 5)\, Vursatyl (Lifesavas)\, and Boots Riley (The Coup)\, From the Corner to the Block exposes GALACTIC's organic grooves to an urban ear while still maintaining their essential funk aesthetic. The band started out over a decade ago as an instrumental act in the tradition of the Meters\, the JB's\, and Booker T. & the MG's - bands equally comfortable recording their own material or working with vocalists. From the Corner to the Block grew out of GALACTIC's experiences touring with artists like the Roots\, Jurassic 5\, Triple Threat DJ's and Gift of Gab. Though it features cameos from a "wish list" of fan-favorite MCs\, this isn't a typical hip-hop album per se\, but a contemporary funk record that just happens to feature hip-hop vocalists. "We never set out to make a rap record\," explains Ellman\, who produced the record with assistance from engineer extraordinaire Count (Halou\, Quannum\, DJ Shadow). "We wanted to kinda modernize the New Orleans sound\," adds Mercurio. The New Orleans legacy echoes throughout the album\, indeed. The brassy "Bounce Baby" (featuring DJ Z-Trip) stirs up wah-wah guitar\, a horn-driven melody\, syncopated beats\, and turntable wizardry into a potent rhythmic instrumental. "Tuff Love" (featuring Trombone Shorty) offers a taste of some of New Orleans' hottest young talent. "Second and Dryades\," (featuring Big Chief Monk Boudreau)\, evokes the spirit of the Wild Magnolias - it's a percussion-laced Mardi Gras anthem for the digi generation\, on which Boudreau relates the story of being an Indian on Mardi Gras day. The song sure to raise eyebrows though is the title track and first single\, featuring the Soul Rebels Brass Band and platinum rapper Juvenile (who tapped GALACTIC to back him on the "Jimmy Kimmel Show"). Mercurio\, for one\, is happy with the outcome. "It sounds like it was all supposed to be there\, this track was meant to happen" he says. The rest of the album features a diverse array of funky arrangements\, vocal deliveries\, and musical expressions\, from sexy downtempo jams like "Squarebiz\," featuring the ever-delectable Ladybug Mecca and singer Nino Moschella; to uptempo party-starters like "What You Need" with Lyrics Born\, and "Hustle Up" with Boots Riley (which Mercurio calls "a total rock tune" dressed in funky threads); to semi-autobiographical tales of urban street life by Mr. Lif (".And I'm Out")\, Vursatyl & Ohmega Watts ("Find My Home")\, Lateef the Truth Seeker ("No Way")\, Gift of Gab ("The Corner")\, and Chali 2na ("Think Back"). Even with all the different vocalists\, the songs maintain a sense of thematic consistency. As Ellman explains\, this was by design: the rappers were each asked to write about a corner. "It could have been any corner\," he says. "Everyone had a different perspective." Many contemporary all-star collaborations are purely commercial exercises\, yet From the Corner to the Block stands as a labor of love\, connecting GALACTIC's hip-hop jones and their guests' fervor for funk aesthetics. The result isn't just the grooviest\, funkiest record of 2007\, but perhaps the finest post-Katrina album to come out of New Orleans.

SUMMARY:Old 97s at the Bottleneck
DESCRIPTION:The Bottleneck presents Old 97s on February 1 at 8:00 p.m. Since the Old 97's roared out of Dallas more than fifteen years ago\, they have blazed a trail through alt-country and power-pop\, led by the piercingly observant lyrics of lead singer Rhett Miller. Each new Old 97’s record is hotly anticipated\, and rightfully so: “Blame It On Gravity\,” from 2008\, contained some of the band’s most deeply felt and passionately played songs. But in a career full of high-water marks\, "The Grand Theatre Volume 1" is perhaps the most ambitious and accomplished set of recordings yet. The album\, the band’s eighth\, began to come together last year\, when Miller was on a solo tour of Europe with Steve Earle. “When I started in this band\, I wrote on the road constantly\,” Miller says. “But I was 23 then\, so everything was new to me. Over the years\, those strange and wonderful things have begun to feel more commonplace. On the familiar highways\, in familiar hotels\, it’s pretty easy to turn into a zombie. But on this tour\, I was in England and Ireland and Scandinavia\, places where I haven’t spent very much time in\, and because of that things seemed somehow fresh. I felt recharged. In these old British theaters\, you sit around in ancient dressing rooms filled with these objects that could only be in these ancient dressing rooms. It was all very inspiring instead of tiring.” The result was a set of songs rooted in specific locations. "The title track\, which I wrote in Leeds\, is like a series of postcards that try to capture the moment of falling in love; it begins in the Grand Theatre\, which is a historic venue there\, on the elevator. There’s another song\, 'Every Night Is Friday Night (Without You)\,' that I wrote\, or at least started to write\, while I was walking around in Soho. And a song like ‘The Dance Class’ wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t in Birmingham\, trapped in a hotel\, looking out at streets that were bleak and gray except for a dance studio across the way. I imagined an agoraphobic who sees a beautiful girl in that studio and fantasizes about being freed by her." Miller’s portraits of love and loneliness are paired with some of the sharpest music the band has ever produced\, from the propulsive celebration of “Every Night Is Friday Night (Without You)” to the manic (and almost panicked) energy of “The Dance Class.” There are also moving counterpoints\, such as the album’s closer\, “The Beauty Marks\,” a stark\, hushed ballad about a love affair in a London pub. Even the songs written on this side of the Atlantic benefit from the same sense of charged observation. "There’s an anthem on there\, 'A State of Texas\,' that I wrote in New York\,” Miller says\, “and it’s specifically about not quite being home: the lyrics says ‘I’m living in a state of Texas’\, not the state of Texas’.’ When Miller had his songs\, he brought them to the rest of the band\, and as usual\, the Old 97s—the bassist Murry Hammond\, the guitarist Ken Bethea\, and the drummer Philip Peeples—rose to the challenge and then some. “I’ve been through this process many times—bringing my songs to the guys as we start to make a record-- and I know they're going to do something great with them. I'm still surprised to hear what they do\, but I'm no longer surprised to be surprised. But there are so many fantastic things on this record\, from a band standpoint. Murry's basslines stray so far from the one-four alt-country style that he's known for. They're things that he might have played in our previous band\, Sleepy Heroes\, eighteen years ago\, but he hasn't\, for the most part\, done it on Old 97's records." The set was produced by Salim Nourallah\, who also produced “Blame It On Gravity\,” and once again it was an all-Texas affair. The band rehearsed the album in Dallas\, at Sons of Hermann Hall\, and recorded it—mostly live in the studio\, with a minimum of overdubs—in Austin's legendary Treefort studio. The richness and diversity of the album has led Miller to liken the record to the Clash's legendary "London Calling\," a comparison he says is only half-flippant. "We had a running joke in the studio. Salim would say 'Hey -- that was great. Now try to do it more like the Clash.' We aren't the Clash\, obviously\, but that kind of direction does bring out some of the best parts of our band's sound\, that aggressive live rock-and-roll thing. There's also a question of artistic freedom\, and what 'London Calling' meant to them at that point in their career. After the first albums\, they had a little bit of leeway to do something more grandiose. We're in a similar place in our career. We've gotten critical approval\, for what it's worth. We have the loyalty of our fans. Now\, we can do something bigger and weirder." Much of that weirdness comes from the band. "I come in with my songs\,” Miller says\, “but I really pride myself on being able to change on a dime when we're in the studio. Someone might suggest doing a song faster\, or slower\, or with a train beat. I'll try it\, and then I'll listen to it new. It's a great process\, because a song that was floundering can be the best song once it goes through that process. When I first wrote 'Every Night Is Friday Night\,’ it was a more traditional party song\, and it wasn’t completely successful. I was singing\, or thought I was singing\, ‘Every night is Friday night with you.” But then Ken\, who is the last person to even notice lyrics much less suggest a lyrical change\, said that he had originally heard it as 'Every night is Friday night without you.’ He wondered if it might be better that way\, less predictable\, and it was." One song that depended upon predictability was "Champaign Illinois\," which is a straightforward rewrite of old composition -- and not one of the band's own. It fits a set of new Miller lyrics to Bob Dylan's epochal "Desolation Row\,” and the experience of putting the song on the record was\, even for hardened rock-and-roll veterans\, an eyeopener. "I had written this song while I was listening to the Dylan song\, obviously\,” Miller says. “But I assumed we’d never be able to record it. Then\, while we were making the record\, we decided to go for it.” Phone calls were made\, and more phone calls after that\, and word finally came back that Dylan\, who had heard a live version of the song\, wanted to read the lyrics. “To hear my manager say\, even in a flat business voice\, 'Bob Dylan likes what he heard and wants to read your lyrics\,’ well\, that was something you dream about\,” Miller says. “It turned out that he liked our version so much that he wanted to split the publishing 50/50 with us. So that’s how I ended up writing a song with Bob Dylan. I’ve never been prouder\, and I assume he feels the same.” Though Miller is frequently funny and self-deprecating\, the “Volume 1” of the title is not a joke. "I came back from the trip with more than two dozen songs\," Miller says. "I kept thinking we would whittle the set down\, but it became obvious that none of the songs were falling by the wayside.” That meant\, for the first time in the band’s career\, that the Old 97s would record a double album. “But how do you really have a double album in today's climate?” says Miller. “I mean\, think about how records are distributed and consumed." The solution was not a traditional double album (as it would have been in the seventies or eighties) or two albums released simultaneously (as it would have been in the nineties)\, but rather a pair of thematically linked records released six months apart: “The Grand Theatre Volume 2” is due out in May 2011. The same themes — place and displacement\, communication and correspondence— power the second volume as well. “If anything\, they’re a little more explicit on the there\,” Miller says. “But that idea\, that songs come from somewhere\, is strong on both halves of the record. It's funny\, because when I'm on stage and I feel myself drifting away\, I bring myself back to the moment of writing the song. With the Grand Theatre songs\, I was much more compulsive about marking down exactly where I was when the idea came to me. I think that makes for a unified studio record\, and it definitely makes for a more focused set of performances onstage.” American audiences will have a chance to experience the band’s focus through the fall: the Old 97s are touring behind “The Grand Theatre Volume One” from December until next April\, at which time the touring for “The Grand Theatre Volume Two” will begin.

SUMMARY:Reverend Horton Heat, Larry and his Flask, Goddam Gallows
DESCRIPTION:The Bottleneck presents Reverend Horton Heat\, Larry and his Flask\, Goddam Gallows on February 25 at 8:00 p.m. It’s true that the Reverend Horton Heat have been called a great many things over the course of their storied career: Perpetual Carriers Of The Rockabilly Flame\, Genre-Shattering Problem Children\, Filthy Drunks\, and The Most Electrifying Live Act In America (150 shows every year can’t be wrong).

SUMMARY:Supersuckers, Spittin' Cobras
DESCRIPTION:The Jayhawks were definitely swimming against the tide when they emerged from a crowded Minneapolis music scene halfway through the 1980s - a memorable decade that saw the likes of the Replacements\, Soul Asylum\, Husker Du and Prince put Minnesota on the musical map in a big way. Forging a rootsy sound that wasn't quite rock or country - "Hank Williams on speed" somebody once memorably called it - The Jayhawks quickly turned into one of the most important bands of the post-punk era. Over the course of two decades\, several albums\, countless memorable live shows and enough personal drama to fill a couple of Behind the Music episodes\, this beloved band soared to heights few ever achieve while wining the hearts and minds of numerous critics\, fans and peers in the process. Named after "The Hawks" - as in "Levon and the Hawks\," the name of Dylan's backing band in the 60s before they became known as "The Band" - The Jayhawks and their fellow travelers even helped make the world safe again for artists who weren't afraid to fuse traditional rock\, country and folk influences into something that was both timeless and modern\, just like the best American bands always have.

SUMMARY:Split Lip Rayfield, Dumptruck Butterlips, Ashes To Immortality
DESCRIPTION:The Bottleneck presents Split Lip Rayfield\, Dumptruck Butterlips\, Ashes To Immortality. The Kansas-based post-punk progressive bluegrass outfit Split Lip Rayfield was comprised of vocalist/banjoist David Lawrence\, guitarist/dobroist Kirk Rundstrom\, and one-string bassist Jeff Eaton\, whose instrument was fashioned from the gas tank of a 1965 Ford. An outgrowth of the group Scroat Belly (though it didn't take long for them to outlive the band that spawned them)\, the trio debuted in 1998 with a self-titled LP issued on the Bloodshot label. In the Mud followed a year later; by this time\, singer and mandolin player Wayne Gottstine had expanded the lineup to four pieces and Eric Mardis had replaced Lawrence on banjo. The new millennium saw the release of a third effort\, Never Make It Home\, which arrived in stores in late 2000. After three years of touring\, which saw the group opening for everyone from Del McCoury to Nashville Pussy\, Split Lip Rayfield recorded and released a fourth long-player\, Should Have Seen It Coming\, in 2004. In early 2006\, Rundstrom (who had also released a few solo records) was diagnosed with cancer. He continued to perform with the band for months as he fought and underwent treatment\, but Rundstrom ultimately succumbed to the disease in February 2007\, just about a week after playing what would be his last show. ~ Jason Ankeny\, All Music Guide
