Friends of KJHK

KJHK’s Development Director Amanda Barnes talks about her KJHK experience and why the station needs your support. (originally published in our November newsletter)

When I first applied to be a DJ at KJHK, it was with the pretense of being able to share and find new music with like-mindedpeople. Little did I know that being involved in the station would not only be an amazing experience, but it would also change my life. DJ’ing was just the beginning. I soon joined Music Staff and began reviewing and contributing albums for other DJs to play. KJHK soon became more than an extracurricular activity to me; I often found myself making excuses to come to the station just to hang out and found any way I could to help make the station better. I loved KJHK so much that I decided to apply for a leadership position during my senior year.

Becoming Development Director at the station has without a doubt been the most rewarding and challenging experience of my college career. I have not only been able to apply all of the skills I’ve learned throughout my Communication Studies curriculum, but I have also learned valuable skills that I would never have been able to gain in the classroom. When I graduate this May, I will take away not only an amazing experience but many valuable lessons and a newfound confidence in myself that I wouldn’t have gained without spending time here.

Although we do receive a small student fee to cover operational costs, KJHK’s annual budget depends mostly on underwriting and fundraising. By supporting KJHK you are not only helping to keep the station on air 24/7 but you are also contributing to a valuable educational opportunity here at the University that shapes the lives of hundreds of students each year.  Thanks for supporting KJHK.
