1953, Tom Petty was born. Petty has performed with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, solo, and with the Traveling Wilburys, featuring other big name musicians such as Bob Dylan and George Harrison.
1962, “Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Crickett and the Crypt Kickers went to No. 1 on the U.S. charts. The song enjoyed a two week run at the top spot.
(Caption) “Monster Mash” was banned from airplay in the UK until 1973 because it was deemed “too morbid” by the BBC.
1971, Snoop Dogg (a.k.a. Calvin Broadus) was born. His 1993 album Doggy Style went to No. 1 in the U.S.
1977, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd were all killed when their plane ran out of fuel and crashed in Gillsburg, Missouri. The crash also killed the band’s manager and seriously injured the other members of the band.
1978, The Police made their U.S. debut at CBGB in New York.
1979, The Eagles began a nine week stay at No. 1 on the U.S. charts with their album, The Long Run.
