Ethan Graham: The first question is, as always, what’s your favorite color and why?
Ricky Smith: My favorite color is red. When I was a kid, my mom went to NC State and they’ve been my favorite team since. So I liked the color red. Plus, my high school was red.
EG: So to follow that up, what is your quest?
RS: I remember you saying something about that and I still don’t get the reference.
EG: I’ll tell you when we’re done.
RS: Well my quest is to achieve everything that my little kid-self wanted to. Like having my own studio, I always wanted that. I want to make my little kid-self happy.
EG: Who is your favorite superhero and why?
RS: Oh, that’s a hard one. It would either be Spiderman or Superman. I’m going to go Spiderman because it (the movie) was one of the first ones that I came across. I mean the first one (movie) came out in my childhood, in 2002. Plus, I’ve always wanted to shoot webs and climb on walls and stuff. I was Spiderman for three different Halloweens.
EG: Cool, I was Spiderman for my first Halloween. Next up, what is your favorite childhood cartoon?
RS: Ohhh, Dexter’s Lab.
EG: That’s a good one.
RS: That or Rugrats, can I only have one?
EG: You can have as many as you want.
RS: Ah, dude, yeah. My top three would be Dexter, Rugrats and Rocko’s Modern Life. Which if you’ve ever seen my art you’d see the influence. No one taught me how to draw so I just learned from what I saw.
EG: I remember Nickelodeon doing those “How to Draw” bumpers between cartoons. I could learn how to draw Timmy Turner.
RS: Yeah, yeah, I remember those.
EG: All right, what would you do if you were the lone survivor in a plane crash?
RS: Well first off, I’d probably be in shock. I don’t know, start praying. Start living life to the fullest.
EG: What is your favorite 90’s jam?
RS: Oof, that’s really hard, it’s a really tough question. I’d have to say Guns N’ Roses with the song, “November Rain.”
EG: What do you want to be when you grow up? Even though I pretty much know it.
RS: Yeah, being a cartoon creator, or a filmmaker. What if I said I wanted to be a doctor? You’d be like “what?” Yeah, drawing is just a hobby man.
EG: Okay, so if you were on a desert island and could only have three things what would they be?
RS: My iPad, something to draw on, and music. I could be happy with just that anywhere. I could just be holed up in a corner with those three things and I’d be cool.
EG: What would be the title to your autobiography?
RS: Uh… that’s a tough one too, I can’t think of anything clever. I don’t know. Something with ‘toon.’
EG: I don’t even want to say it now because I’ve got something.
RS: You do?
EG: It just makes sense since your name is Ricky.
RS: Oh what is it?
EG: RickToon
RS: Oh, dude that’s a good one, and my twitter handle is even Rickelodeon. Yeah let’s go with that. It’s awesome. I don’t even know why I didn’t think of that.
EG: So last question, what is your favorite band? You can have as many as you want.
RS: Let me think. It would be Disturbed. Oh, and for classic rock, I’d go with Metallica.
