Farmer’s Ball Fast Fives: Black Light Animals!

C0-written by Tyler Burkett and Max Bryan

This past week, Cole and Nate from Black Light Animals came in to the KJHK station to answer a few burning questions concerning their sound, the meaning of life, and other soulful goodies! Check out the highlights from the interview down below and keep it locked!

Tyler: What kind of music do you make and who do you make it for?

Cole: We tell people psychedelic soul. We like 90s hip hop, spaghetti western scores, 60 psych rock, and I guess we make it for people who are as nerdy about rare and obscure records as we are.

Tyler: So how did y’all get formed? What drew y’all together?

Cole: Well my buddy Cody and I had known each other forever, we were in Instant Karma together. We were mistaken for a Beatles cover band a lot so we took a trip in the woods, and we came up with the name Black Light Animals.

Tyler: What is a weird inspiration for your music that’s not a music thing. What are you drawing from when you wanna make music? What are weird quirky things that you use in the back of your head?

Cole: I’m a really dull person… I live a really boring life. A lot of the inspiration comes from old movies.

Nate: I only recently started writing music with these guys. I’m just all over the place, very spacey. I’m digging through old artists. Obscure artists, I’m trying to dig through them and make their sounds more acceptable.
