Deegan Poores (Senior, Co Music Director)

What is your position at KJHK?

I’m a Co Music Director at KJHK

Tell me about your show. What do you do during it?

It’s one of the legacy shows at KJHK so I didn’t come up with the idea. It’s been around for a while, and different people kind of take them over. It’s a show where it’s all vinyl-based — all the music is played on record. In the studio, there are two turntables set up to play them. Most of the records are from my personal collection.

What’s your favorite part about hosting?

The hands-on physical nature of it: having to flip between two turntables, pulling out a record from the bin, taking the record out of the sleeve, putting on the turntable, finding which track the grooves correspond with, setting the needle, and getting it right so that it starts smoothly. It can get kind of hectic and fun and really hands-on because, you know, you’ve really only got like, two minutes to get the other record ready.

Who’s an underrated artist you think more people should know about?

Prefab Sprout. They’re a band from the 80s. They were lumped in with the sophisti-pop scene, where it’s like really clean production, brill building pop era songwriting, cool jazz chords, a really sleek sound, and absolutely phenomenal songwriting.

What actor would you want to play yourself in a movie?

I would probably pick Drew Carey. I’ve been told I look like him and I think I’m pretty funny.
