Griffin Lowry

Name, grade, position at KJHK?

Griffin Lowry, senior, Music Director

Tell us about your show?

My show is called Weird World. It’s on Thursday nights from 8-10pm. I like to call it the show where all things experimental are welcome. I play practically any genre that can be classified as left-field, avant-garde, experimental, bizarre–you name it. I will have anything from Steve Reich, to JPEGMAFIA, to some free-jazz, or even some local artists. On Halloween last year I played music from the Shining which features a classical composer who could be considered a pioneer in drone music, oddly enough. I am also considering playing music that would only be considered weird in the context of Weird World, which by definition would be “normal” music. I’m thinking of playing Christmas music that is extremely slowed down on a random week, which would be funny.

What’s your favorite part about hosting it?

I have a lot of favorite things about hosting the show. One is the idea that people are tuning in while in their car and have no idea what show they are listening to, and are just hearing some weird music. If a random person tunes into my show by chance and asks themselves, “What the hell am I listening to?” I consider my mission accomplished. Additionally, weird is a very subjective term. So at the end of the day, I can really play any songs I want, even if someone might not consider them “weird.” At the same time, I’ve had people who tuned in to my show say “Your show made me realize that the music I considered weird isn’t weird at all.” I also love the idea that some of the songs I play might have never been played on traditional radio before.

Weird World airs every Thursday from 8-10 p.m.
