{"id":10498,"date":"2012-03-05T12:12:12","date_gmt":"2012-03-05T18:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=10498"},"modified":"2012-03-05T12:12:12","modified_gmt":"2012-03-05T18:12:12","slug":"jayhawks-roughed-up-in-utsa-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2012\/03\/05\/jayhawks-roughed-up-in-utsa-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Jayhawks Roughed Up In UTSA Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Blake Schuster<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A week ago the Jayhawks were cruising at 32,000 feet, riding a 5-2 record, celebrating on a Southwest flight from Mississippi to Kansas by helping the stewards\u2019 pass out snacks to fellow travelers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10499\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10499\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Duncan_Frank_mug.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10499\" title=\"Baseball Mugs\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Duncan_Frank_mug-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Duncan_Frank_mug-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Duncan_Frank_mug.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10499\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frank Duncan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This weekend, they scurried home from the UTSA Classic looking to recover from a three-game shelling that dropped Kansas to 5-5.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore pitcher Frank Duncan was torn apart in a five-hit, four-run first inning on Friday night against the UTSA Roadrunners, putting Kansas in a hole to start out the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan recovered to throw five more scoreless innings, but it was clear UTSA figured out his fastball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were on time with his fastball,\u201d Kansas coach Ritch Price said. \u201cWithout question, he didn\u2019t spin the ball as good as he normally does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Jayhawks would go on to lose 7-4, and Kansas\u2019 pitching continued to tumble.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman pitcher Wes Benjamin only tossed 4.1 innings, giving up five earned runs in an 8-6 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette. He was followed up by Thomas Taylor, who lasted 5.1 innings with 10 hits and five earned runs in the weekend finale against Gonzaga. The Jayhawks lost to the Bulldogs 7-2.<\/p>\n<p>In three games, Kansas starting pitchers gave up 14 runs on 24 hits, and no pitcher made it past the sixth inning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all three games, they attacked the fastball,\u201d Thomas Taylor said. \u201cThey all got after us early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week the Jayhawk batters emphasized efficiency with breaking balls in practice, but now it seems Kansas\u2019 pitchers will be doing the same this week.<\/p>\n<p>The batters had a week to practice hitting off-speed pitches, but the pitchers have fewer than 48 hours before their home opener against North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>Even though this could be seen as a setback, Price welcomed the opportunity for his arms to get back into competition and to try to fix the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that is the biggest positive of the week; that we are playing five times,\u201d Price said. \u201cThe more you play, the better you get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a veteran, Thomas Taylor is already looking at ways to keep batters on edge while he is on the mound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to mix it up a little bit earlier,\u201d Taylor said \u201cGo with the slider a little more often instead of just going after them with the fastball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>-Edited by C.J.
