How psychedelic music spread to the East<\/strong><\/p>\n

Early psychedelia in Japan arose in the late 60\u2019s \u2013 early 70\u2019s, shortly after psychedelic music gained popularity in the West.\u00a0 It was clearly influenced by the new sounds coming out of America, where counter-culture movements and protests among rebellious youth were quite\u00a0 connected to the early psychedelic music scene.<\/p>\n

On the surface, early Japanese psychedelic bands seem to be merely imitating these feelings with their behavior and sound, however, during this period Japan was going through very similar social situations which may explain why the Japanese related with the rock & roll movements coming out of America.\u00a0 The major protests in Japan during this era took the form of massive student protests against the Japanese government\u2019s position on Vietnam and Japan and the U.S.\u2019s occupation in Okinawa.\u00a0 At any rate, the music that emerged out of this is very interesting.\u00a0 Some bands to look into would be, The Mops<\/em>, Stomu Yamashita<\/em> or The Jacks<\/em>, and anything that\u00a0(\u77f3\u9593 \u79c0\u6a5f) was involved in.\u00a0 Ishima now exclusively plays an instrument that he invented called the sitarla.\u00a0 It\u2019s a combination of the sitar and a guitar.\u00a0 This first video is a clip from a rock musical that Ishima wrote the soundtrack for:<\/p>\n
