I’m honored to have a second one pass through my greedy ears in my year as music director here at the station, and you should be grinning from ear to ear that it’s here to hear. John Dwyer, Petey Dammit, Brigid Dawson, and Mike Shoun are a prolific quartet with an unbeatable equation of quantity and quality, and they lead Dwyer’s Castle Face record label boldly forward once again with Floating Coffin. It’s certainly Oh Sees from side one track one, as they “Come From The Mountain” with their barely organized chaos tunes, just managing to keep the train on the rails at full speed ahead. They play with more balance as the album progresses into first single “Toe Cutter / Thumb Buster”, showcasing the melodic soft touch the band possesses and gladly interposes with crunchy guitar and grooving bass. “Floating Coffin” skitters forward at a sprint that is a thrill to hear and see live. “No Spell” also shows off the balanced attack/release of the group, going quiet enough to let Dawson’s vocals float above the mix with Dwyer’s falsettos before an electric livewire of a guitar fill slices the silence.
