{"id":26508,"date":"2013-10-25T12:00:28","date_gmt":"2013-10-25T17:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=26508"},"modified":"2013-10-20T21:55:55","modified_gmt":"2013-10-21T02:55:55","slug":"for-the-record-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2013\/10\/25\/for-the-record-3\/","title":{"rendered":"For the Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Of Montreal Album Review<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hello everyone!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kyle Stringer again &#8211; this time with two album reviews. \u00a0I recently purchased of Montreal\u2019s \u201cLousy with Sylvianbriar,\u201d once again, on vinyl. \u00a0I love of Montreal, and would probably put them on my list of top 5 bands. \u00a0However, I don\u2019t feel the same about this album.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For me, of Montreal at their peak was what they were creating from \u201cThe Sunlandic Twins\u201d to \u201cFalse Priest\u201d with special emphasis on \u201cSkeletal Lamping\u201d and \u201cHissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?\u201d \u00a0At the time of those albums, they had everything I loved \u2013 quick unsuspecting chord changes, bazaar lyrics, catchy melodies, wild transitions, great multiple bass lines, and the wonderful electro-pop sound most people know them for.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The new album, however, is void of nearly all of those things. \u00a0Kevin Barns still knows how to write great vocal melodies and strange lyrics, but the pop side to the band is all but gone (not to mention nearly all of the band members from their previous albums!). \u00a0\u201cLousy with Sylvianbriar\u201d takes the better parts of country music and mixes them with groups from the 70\u2019s, such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones. \u00a0The music is more lyric-based, with less chord changes. \u00a0I\u2019ll admit that some of the songs on the album are quite catchy. \u00a0Upon first listen, I was not a fan of the album, and even told a friend that it was \u201cno good.\u201d \u00a0Apparently was wrong, because I was humming the melody to the opening track \u201cFugitive Air\u201d the very next day.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/imgres1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26509 aligncenter\" alt=\"imgres\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/imgres1.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/imgres1.jpg 224w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/imgres1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/imgres1-125x125.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I would never say that this album is one of of Montreal\u2019s best, but I would also not say it is bad. \u00a0I believe some people who weren\u2019t into their electro-pop phase would probably like it. \u00a0It has its standout tracks, but it also has the opposite. \u00a0It\u2019s worth a shot, and I\u2019ll probably be playing a couple tracks on my show on occasion.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments or call in during \u201cFor The Record\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">See you all out in the universe somewhere<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Written by Kyle Stringer.
