Also Haim happened (!), and brace yourselves, Chance the Rapper is coming&#8230;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As I write this, it\u2019s Halloween, and three weeks ago today Haim played to a filled-to-the-brim Granada.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pitch.com\/FastPitch\/archives\/2013\/10\/11\/review-haim-at-the-granada-last-night-1010\">It was a great show<\/a> that couldn\u2019t have happened at a better time.\u00a0 Thanks to SUA for partnering with KJHK to bring the Haim sisters and thanks to everybody who came out for a great night!<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get comfortable, Lawrence.\u00a0 Our second big show of the semester quickly approaches.\u00a0 Chance the Rapper, the Chicago native known for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QRv2_zAPrhc\">particularly <i>acidic<\/i> brand<\/a> of rap, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/688768094481558\/?previousaction=join&amp;source=1\">comes to Liberty Hall Sunday, November 10<\/a>. \u00a0Ticket vendors have reported being sold out of their tickets already, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libertyhall\/status\/395673497256857600\">which is true<\/a>, BUT you can still snag a ticket through the KU Union Programs Box Office (open M-F 9-5).\u00a0 This show will sell out, so don\u2019t be <i>that guy<\/i>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26881\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26881\" style=\"width: 819px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_20131016_2404587031.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-26881 \" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_20131016_2404587031-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Glasser 10\/15\/13 at Music Hall of Williamsburg\" width=\"819\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_20131016_2404587031-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_20131016_2404587031-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glasser 10\/15\/13 at Music Hall of Williamsburg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you didn\u2019t already pick up on it, we at KJHK hang our hats on bringing the best and newest indie selections to your ears.\u00a0 We also try to keep things a little weird.\u00a0 With that in mind two weeks ago I ran off to New York City for this year\u2019s CMJ Music Marathon.\u00a0 It was my task to run all over the Lower East Side, West Village, and Brooklyn, and sleep-be-damned, see as many bands as I possibly could.\u00a0 It was a blast.\u00a0 The cold promptly kicked in after getting back to LFK, but who cares. It was worth it.<\/p>\n<p>Among my favorites were <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/blacktaximusic\">Black Taxi<\/a>, a Brooklyn band whose energetic lead singer and occasional trumpeter (I use that term loosely, but it was still surprisingly tasteful) had the crowd in the palm of his hand.\u00a0 Check them out!\u00a0 I\u2019m a fan of more electronic-leaning \u00a0and soul\/funk sounds, so some other favorites were <a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/lucashomer\/playlist\/2QLYNKX5lwYIsuJgtlX239\">Glasser<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/lucashomer\/playlist\/2UIUh9c75vBQ4Xn2KXpd9F\">Hockey<\/a>, and Pattern Is Movement (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/1499271\/pattern-is-movement-untitled-how-does-it-feel-dangelo-cover-video-stereogum-premiere\/video\/\">they played this<\/a>, nailed it, and I might\u2019ve shed some man tears).\u00a0 The Seattle indie station, <a href=\"http:\/\/kexp.org\/search?q=cmj+2013\">KEXP<\/a>, took over a church hall for the week and hosted bands all day playing live broadcast sets.\u00a0 I caught Ski Lodge and The Helio Sequence, among others.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26883\" style=\"width: 819px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/13820404461941.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-26883 \" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/13820404461941-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Ski Lodge - Live on KEXP at CMJ 2013\" width=\"819\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/13820404461941-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/13820404461941-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ski Lodge &#8211; Live on KEXP at CMJ 2013<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26886\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26886\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/IMG_20131017_1844163831.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26886\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/IMG_20131017_1844163831-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Pattern Is Movement - 10\/16\/13 at Webster Hall\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pattern Is Movement &#8211; 10\/16\/13 at Webster Hall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If there was one thing to take away from the College Radio Day panels, it was an enormous sense of KJHK pride.\u00a0 There were representatives from stations in large media markets, stations broadcasting solely on terrestrial (fancy talk for FM) radio, and stations devoted only to internet broadcast.\u00a0 I stole lots of ideas (shout out to KUOM in Minneapolis), but honestly, for the size of Lawrence, I can confidently say the staff and DJs at KJHK do a damn good job providing extremely diverse content across several platforms.\u00a0 There weren\u2019t many completely student-run stations broadcasting on FM, Internet (fun fact: KJHK was the first college station to broadcast online), producing original news, sports and musical content that also boasted a comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/kjhk\/id582895026?mt=8\">iPhone app<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26888\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/IMG_20131019_2100527831.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26888\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/IMG_20131019_2100527831-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Josh Berwanger Band - 10\/19\/13 at Mercury Lounge\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Josh Berwanger Band &#8211; 10\/19\/13 at Mercury Lounge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One final CMJ thought: despite the fact that we can now discover and access music in so many different ways, radio, especially college radio, will always have a place.\u00a0 It\u2019s impossible to completely replace the human element you get when you turn on the radio to hear a DJ\u2019s taste, developed over a long period of time and influenced by other humans\u2019 tastes, and listen to a well-prepared set.\u00a0 Pandora can only get so creative, and Pitchfork, well, is Pitchfork.\u00a0 As long as we keep things fresh and weird, KJHK will offer a certain listening experience that can\u2019t be reproduced anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>** Hey freeloaders!
