{"id":30547,"date":"2014-05-08T13:30:55","date_gmt":"2014-05-08T18:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=30547"},"modified":"2015-06-27T16:23:43","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T21:23:43","slug":"the-rinse-out-pays-tribute-to-a-house-legend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2014\/05\/08\/the-rinse-out-pays-tribute-to-a-house-legend\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rinse Out Pays Tribute To A House Legend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Three Classic Frankie Tracks<\/span><\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If you were unaware, Frankie Knuckles passed away a couple weeks ago.\u00a0 Frankie Knuckles, in addition to Larry Levan, Ron Hardy, and a handful of others, was an essential part of house music evolving from disco in Chicago and New York in the early 1980s.\u00a0 In an effort to pass the knowledge of his influence on to those unfamiliar with Frankie\u2019s work, I am going to highlight three representative tracks of his that showcase his wide production prowess, both in his original work and his remixes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle \u2013 Your Love (1987)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t have the overwhelming melodies and percussion of contemporary house tracks, but its sparse atmosphere lets the rolling bassline breathe.\u00a0 Adrienne Jett\u2019s sultry vocals recall Knuckles and Principle\u2019s naughty counterpart, \u201cBaby Wants To Ride\u201d and make the track the perfect selection for the peak 2 AM time of a party.\u00a0 Quintessential Frankie.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LOLE1YE_oFQ\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hercules and Love Affair \u2013 Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix) (2007)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DFA\u2019s Hercules and Love Affair might seem like an odd choice for an old-timer like Frankie to remix, but this track just goes to show how deep and committed he was to house music.\u00a0 The original was dance-able enough, but Frankie takes it to the next level and adds a swinging bassline, classic Chicago piano, and a cheeky trumpet.\u00a0 The vocals surprisingly work quite well with the track which should not be that much of a shock considering the quality of his compositions and ear for melody.\u00a0 This track probably goes over much better with younger audiences, but it fits in perfectly with the rest of his oeuvre.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NZ6sLFDUPWg\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Shapeshifters \u2013 Back To Basics (Director\u2019s Cut Signature Mix) (2013)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frankie Knuckles remixes the UK\u2019s Shapeshifter\u2019s 2005 house hit with this tune under his Director\u2019s Cut series.\u00a0 Feeling a bit more glossy than some of his other work, this remix still brings the heat with synths that climax periodically to complement the classic disco orchestral sound.\u00a0 Frankie gives the DJ (and crowd) a bit of a break halfway through the track with a darker, percussion-based breakdown that culminated in everything but the mids being cut off.\u00a0 Shortly thereafter we orchestra and drums hit full force after everyone has gotten a breather.\u00a0 Upbeat and sexy, Frankie continued blessing us with tunes and DJ sets up until the day he died.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IBMyDQ4Rwns\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>How do you thank someone for giving the world a gift as important as house music?\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure there is a way, so I\u2019ll just have to suggest everyone give him and the music a chance and embrace all it offers.\u00a0 We love you, Frankie.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/644UU55eyzk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixcloud.com\/mike-van-esler\/the-rinse-out-april-mix\/\">While I\u2019ve included a monthly Rinse Out mix that is a tribute to Frankie<\/a>, I would highly suggest checking out the above Boiler Room set he did in New York City last year.\u00a0 Even while in the midst of poor health, Frankie still rocked a Boiler Room party pretty damn hard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/unnamed-11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30549 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/unnamed-11-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"unnamed-1\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/unnamed-11-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/unnamed-11.jpg 399w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Written by Mike VanElser.
