{"id":32345,"date":"2014-11-17T12:34:04","date_gmt":"2014-11-17T18:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=32345"},"modified":"2014-11-17T12:34:04","modified_gmt":"2014-11-17T18:34:04","slug":"deerhoof-la-isla-bonita","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2014\/11\/17\/deerhoof-la-isla-bonita\/","title":{"rendered":"Deerhoof: La Isla Bonita"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re up for an adventure, give it a spin.<!--more-->What can I even say about Deerhoof? \u00a0They\u2019re strange, eclectic, beautiful, hilarious, and terrifying all at the same time. \u00a0They\u2019re definitely an acquired taste, but once that taste is acquired, it\u2019s hard to get enough of them.<\/p>\n<p><em>La Isla Bonita<\/em> is their 13th album and was put out in celebration of Deerhoof\u2019s 20th anniversary. \u00a0It was recorded in guitarist Ed Rodriguez\u2019s basement in a matter of 10 days, live, DIY style. \u00a0<i>La Isla Bonita<\/i> was also co-produced by none other than long time Pitchfork writer and fan of the band Nick Sylvester. \u00a0They had a big slumber party full of arguments about what the sound should be, laughter, and music making. \u00a0That sounds like a slumber party I would love to be at, and the result is incredible.<\/p>\n<p>Composed of repeated musical motifs and simple arrangements, heavily influenced by The Ramones, and topped off with a little classic Deerhoof charm,<i> La Isla Bonita<\/i> is a wild ride from beginning to end. \u00a0It\u2019s grungy, cacophonous, precise, and artfully constructed. \u00a0Every song is different and weird in its own way, but there\u2019s a cohesive flow to the album that\u2019s really quite impressive.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t say enough about how much I love Satomi Matsuzaki\u2019s vocals throughout this whole album. \u00a0The lyrics are a hodgepodge of ridiculous nonsense that make so much sense in the context of Deerhoof\u2019s sound and aesthetic. \u00a0Her voice is childlike and deceptively powerful. \u00a0She leads the band to just the right balance of order and chaos.<\/p>\n<p>You really can\u2019t go wrong with any of these tracks. \u00a0\u201cExit Only\u201d could almost be a Ramones track. \u00a0\u201cTiny Bubbles\u201d and \u201cBlack Pitch\u201d are my personal favorites, but really, every track on this album is my favorite.<\/p>\n<p>If I had to come up with something that could be improved upon, I don\u2019t think I could. It\u2019s a little silly how much I like it, actually.
