{"id":35363,"date":"2015-07-14T13:48:15","date_gmt":"2015-07-14T18:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=35363"},"modified":"2015-07-14T15:19:40","modified_gmt":"2015-07-14T20:19:40","slug":"the-misadventures-of-eddie-turner-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2015\/07\/14\/the-misadventures-of-eddie-turner-3\/","title":{"rendered":"The Misadventures Of Eddie Turner #3"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Misadventures of Eddie Turner AKA DJ SleepyHead #3<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Late Night With Engine 7&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> Week three into writing this journal, and I guess that I\u2019ve gotten some of the back story stuff out of the way. Now it\u2019s time to jump into some of the good stuff.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was maybe like my third week DJing and I offered to cover an overnight shift so that I could get myself some more experience. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The shift started at two in the morning (on\u00a0a Monday) which was lucky since I had class in the afternoons on Monday. So it wasn\u2019t going to be so bad being up that early. However,\u00a0I was going to be the only person in the station at that time, which made it a really big deal for me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I had woken up at around\u00a0one and left as soon as I was dressed so I could\u00a0get my playlist made before I went on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> As I arrived at the station I saw that there was a DJ in the studio that I hadn\u2019t met yet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She was playing some pretty good stuff as I went into the Music Library and began to pull albums from the shelves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cHey, you\u2019re not Sarah.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I turned around to see the DJ standing in the doorway to the studio. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cNo, I\u2019m Eddie. I\u2019m covering Sarah\u2019s show today.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> She stepped through the door, \u201cI\u2019m Emma. Yeah, I think she said something about not making it tonight. So how long have you been a DJ?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> I continued looking through the shelves, \u201cNot long, just the last few weeks really.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cAh, a new guy&#8230;what\u2019s your regular shift?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She asked <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cUm, Wednesdays at three.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I said <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cOh, that\u2019s a good time slot. I kinda wish I had that shift instead of the middle of the night.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cIt was really the only open time I had outside of classes and stuff.\u201d I said collecting my albums<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and moving them into the studio. \u201cSo do you do anything else at the station besides DJ?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cOh, yeah I\u2019m currently working on the Music Staff. We review all the albums that come into the station.\u201d She said picking up one of my CDs. \u201cSee these reviews, that\u2019s what Music Staff does. Makes sure that the station is playing only the best and making sure DJs don\u2019t play something they shouldn\u2019t.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cSounds pretty cool, how do I get in on that?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I asked as I queued up my first track. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cJust come to the meeting this week. I think we\u2019re meeting just down the hall.\u00a0Let my give you my number and I\u2019ll let you know when and where.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> I handed her my phone as I hit the mic one button, \u201cHello everybody, DJ SleepyHead here at your service.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m filling in for Sarah this morning, hopefully I\u2019m up for the task. Why don\u2019t we get this show started and remember not to touch that dial, you\u2019re listening to KDSK 91.1 Your Music Education.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I hit the button for the CD player and then the mic button again to turn it off. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cDJ SleepyHead, eh?\u201d Emma handed back my phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cIt\u2019s early morning and I am still a bit tired so I thought it fit pretty well.\u201d I said sitting down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cWell, all right, I should probably get out of here and let you get to work. I\u2019ll see you around SleepyHead.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cYeah, see you around Emma.\u201d She left the station and now I was alone, at least for a little while. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> The show went on pretty normally, for about two hours.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was resting my eyes quickly during a rather long song, when I started seeing flashes through my eyelids.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I looked at the phone to see if it was a call, not a call.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The flashes were coming from a small red box near the door that read fire alarm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">This was not what I expected to happen when I agreed to sub this shift.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>had no idea what to do, so I did the only thing I could do which was to leave the station and go outside, since that\u2019s what they always teach you to do when the fire alarm goes off. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> It was rather dark outside being like four A.M., I was the only student around at that time and the only other people I saw were the few janitors that were working the overnight shift. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The fire truck arrived making the front of the union a blaze of red and blue as the lights flashed on the truck.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I sat staring at the truck as it was really the only thing I could do as I waited to go back in. It took about thirty minutes or so, before the truck left and a cop on a Segway rolled over to me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cYou with KDSK?\u201d He asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cYes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cWell, it looks clear now, but the lights haven\u2019t gone off yet, they should soon. It seems like the sprinkler systems water pressure was low and that triggered the alarm.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So I can\u2019t tell you to go back in, but I can\u2019t stop you either.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He balanced himself nicely on the Segway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cThanks, for letting me know.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> He rode away as I walked back into the building and down to the station. I explained that<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I had to leave due to the alarm going off and apologized that nothing had played for the last half hour.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The rest of the shift was relatively quiet after that, even though the lights from the studio\u2019s fire alarm didn\u2019t stop flashing during the rest of my show.
