Saturday, October 3rd from 5:30-10:30 pm at the Lied Center, SUA and KJHK will be bringing you art of all variations. They\u2019ve got music from Lion (6:15-6:45), Various Blonde (7-7:30), La Guerre (8:30-9:15), and Shy Boys (9:30-10:15)<\/b><b>\u00a0outside, and inside there will be live painting, a local art gallery, and showings of local films. This is going to be quite an evening, y\u2019all. I\u2019m gonna put on my fringe jacket and my dancin\u2019 boots. I hope to groove with all of you there.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>To keep you satisfied until October 3rd rolls around, we\u2019ve got some music features from each of these killer artists. You\u2019ll be able to hear them on the airwaves, especially during our weekday local blocks from 6-7 pm, but they\u2019re also available all over the interwebz. Here are the tunes: La Guerre, with their January album release <i>Sapphires, <\/i>Shy Boys with their recent self titled release, Various Blonde with their newest singles from the past 2 months, and LION with his\u00a0fantastic new LP, <em>Disquiet<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>La Guerre, <em>Sapphires<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katlyn Conroy is the front-human of La Guerre, a folk pop staple of the Lawrence music scene that has been releasing music for the last 6+ years. Her songwriting is consistently highly personal and intuitive, and the newest LP from La Guerre, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sapphires,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released this past January, is no exception. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The album starts off with \u201cMatthew,\u201d a track with vivid writing and all around\u00a0entrancing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intensity. Conroy\u2019s voice here, and in the rest of the album, is purrfect; \u00a0it\u2019s delicacy is the cornerstone of La Guerre\u2019s sound. She is subtle yet soulful, combining in this first track with deep legato notes on strings and a constant background of synth to create a beautiful ambiance. Things pick up on<a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37619 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"cover\" width=\"206\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-125x125.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a> the fourth track, \u201cAny Other\u201d with upbeat synth, steady drumming, and vulnerable soprano vocals. Things get a bit poppy, in a wonderful way. Another notable track \u201cArrow and Bow,\u201d has a steady driving rhythm and poetics from Conroy: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery film I devour has a commentator \/ from the past conversations that surfaced that surfaced so fast \/ yet the curious part, the real cause for alarm \/ isn\u2019t that I can\u2019t hear it again, but that it never left.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This entire album consistently has consciously visceral lyrics, which in turn creates music that is deeply personal and attractive. The sharing of a soul is a hard thing for anyone to do, and Conroy and her band mates do it with loads of beauty. Lawrence is lucky to have you, La Guerre. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out La Guerre\u2019s impressive catalog of tunes and <a href=\"http:\/\/katlynconroy.bandcamp.com\/album\/sapphires\">pick up Sapphires!<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Shy Boys,<i> Shy Boys<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shy Boys, a 3 piece indie pop rock\/60&#8217;s psychedelic band has found a home in Kansas City. Starting off in the DIY\/house show scene, over the last few years they&#8217;ve quickly gained a large following. The band consistently plays\u00a0shows in the Lawrence\/Kansas City area, as well as tours. They went on what seemed to be one hell of a tour this summer with <a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/a2996900565_16.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37621 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/a2996900565_16-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"a2996900565_16\" width=\"187\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a>STRFKR over a two week span. The group released their debut album,\u00a0<em>Shyboys<\/em>, back in January 2014 with High Dive Records (who also boasts local KC artists like The ACB&#8217;s, Rev\u00a0Gusto, Bummer, and Ghosty).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Shy boys\u00a0<\/em>is an album that fits right in with the dreamy shoegaze craze that&#8217;s seeming to swamp the alternative scene.\u00a0It&#8217;s easy to get lost in the middle of this album (wonderfully). The combined vocals of guitarist Collin Rausch and bassist Kyle Rausch are soothing and almost mixed right into the instrumentation, sometimes with lyrics that are indiscernible but enjoyable nonetheless. Konnor Ervin on drums holds the group together, keeping things at that wonderful place of loosey goosey yet tight.<\/p>\n<p>Some noteable tracks: &#8220;Keep Me On My Toes&#8221; is an infectious <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-37634\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/shy-boys.jpeg\" alt=\"shy-boys\" width=\"271\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/shy-boys.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/shy-boys-300x187.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/>single worthy track with a killer bass riff. &#8220;Heart Is Mine&#8221; is smooth and slow, and incredibly soothing. Sweet reverb on the guitar here. The album closes things up with &#8220;Trim,&#8221; which starts off bare bones with the bass and drums, then builds into some\u00a0lush\u00a0guitar work and ends thing on a heavier note.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/shyboys.bandcamp.com\/\">Pick up their self-titled LP<\/a>,\u00a0and check out their <a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2015\/03\/23\/live-kjhk-w-shy-boys\/\">in-studio with Live @ KJHK<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><b>Various Blonde, \u00a0<em>All Bases Covered<\/em> &amp; <em>Indigo Children<\/em><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got 2 sweet singles to feature from Various Blonde, a Kansas City group that has been blurring the lines of genre since 2008. The group is headed by Joshua Allen and supported by bass player Evanjohn Mcintosh, keyboard player Eddie Moore, and drummer Mark Lomas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37622 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/0003372609_10-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"0003372609_10\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/0003372609_10-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/0003372609_10-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/0003372609_10-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/0003372609_10.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The first single, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/variousblonde.bandcamp.com\/track\/indigo-children\">Indigo Children<\/a>,&#8221; was released just over a week ago on the Various Blonde&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/variousblonde.bandcamp.com\/music\">Bandcamp<\/a>. It&#8217;s a 4 minute doozy, blending disco, funk, pop, electronic, and rock to create a hell of a dance number. There&#8217;s a lot of sick synth here, along with very poppy, yet catchy vocals reminiscent of Chromeo.<\/p>\n<p>The second recently released single from Various Blonde is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/variousblonde.bandcamp.com\/track\/all-bases-covered\">All Bases Covered<\/a>,&#8221; from back in mid-August. The track starts off sounding leagues more rock influenced, but a minute in the synth kicks in behind the lyrics &#8220;Let&#8217;s get blacked out, blacked out,&#8221; and the song instantly becomes something else. It continues the deep rock vibes, but builds on the binge-drinking chorus and gets\u00a0pretty electronic and dreamy.<\/p>\n<p><b>LION, <em>Disquiet<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Rogers is the one man powerhouse producer from KC who is behind the electronic hip-hop project\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thereallioneatspeople?fref=ts\">LION<\/a>. Out of the four artists on the Midwest FallFest LION may be the newest, but in no way does that separate him from the other artists; Rogers is playing killer live shows and releasing music on the regular.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37633 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/10981825_614618225305872_3568964422321058512_n.jpg\" alt=\"10981825_614618225305872_3568964422321058512_n\" width=\"198\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/10981825_614618225305872_3568964422321058512_n.jpg 850w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/10981825_614618225305872_3568964422321058512_n-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/10981825_614618225305872_3568964422321058512_n-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/10981825_614618225305872_3568964422321058512_n-125x125.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rogers&#8217; latest LION release, Disquiet, is a 10 track LP of quite impressive scope and quality. At it&#8217;s core,\u00a0Disquiet straddles the line between electronic and hip-hop, at times dipping into trip hop, soul, and atmospheric ambiance. The tracks are mostly instrumental, with vocal sampling that tends to be more melodic than lyrical. There is loads of depth here, and something that every ear can find entrancing. Some of the hardest hitting tracks include &#8220;Still Awake, Still Dreaming,&#8221; &#8220;Believe,&#8221; which features Bonzo Madrid, and the smooth bass of &#8220;Oath.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/dusty-international\/sets\/lion-disquiet-lp\">Pick up Disquiet<\/a>, and come support\u00a0local art at Midwest FallFest, October 3rd from 5:30-10:30 in Lawrence, at the Lied Center.
