{"id":39951,"date":"2015-11-24T15:45:23","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T21:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=39951"},"modified":"2015-11-24T15:45:23","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T21:45:23","slug":"bill-clinton-receives-2015-dole-leadership-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2015\/11\/24\/bill-clinton-receives-2015-dole-leadership-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Clinton Receives 2015 Dole Leadership Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\u201cCooperation Over Conflict\u201d&#8211;Former President Bill Clinton received 2015 Dole Leadership Prize<\/h3>\n<p>Former President Bill Clinton received the 2015 Dole Leadership Prize and gave a speech stressing bipartisanship at the Lied Center yesterday afternoon, on November 23rd, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton addressed the importance of bipartisanship, and exemplified this by talking about his past rivalry with Bob Dole in 1996 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe polarization of American politics is present not just in Washington but in American life,\u201d said Clinton, who was speaking\u00a0to a full crowd at the Lied Center.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton said over the course of time, Americans already become \u201cless racist,&#8221; \u201cless sexist,&#8221; \u201cless religiously bigoted,&#8221; and \u201cless homophobic.&#8221; Clinton continued with, \u201cWe have one remaining bigotry; we don\u2019t want to be around anybody that disagrees with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clinton said America is making progress by its increasing attention on networking and cooperation, and states that we are at America\u2019s scariest and greatest time. However, he made it clear that America still has plenty of potential within it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2535.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39975 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2535-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Bill Clinton Lied Center\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2535-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2535-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2535-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2535.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The event, hosted at the Lied Center, was open to KU students and the general public, who gave the\u00a0president a warm welcome from the full house. KU Students responded positively to the chance given by KU to see\u00a0with a former president and hear his speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really liked everything he said about bipartisanship and making changes,\u201d third-year KU student\u00a0Gabrielle Naylr said, \u201cI think it\u2019s definitely something that our campus needed to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Nidhi Patel, major in Biology, said she felt very inspired by his speech, appreciating this \u201conce in a lifetime opportunity.&#8221; She said she felt the speech was relatable when Clinton\u00a0brought up\u00a0details about\u00a0the human genome and thought this was a\u00a0crucial to his dedication towards\u00a0humanity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re 99.5 percent the same,\u201d Clinton said, \u201cit is an act of supreme arrogance to believe that our differences are more important than our common humanity and it\u2019s a recipe for disaster in an interdependent world because it unleashes us to act on impulse in a dehumanizing way to other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First year KU student, Mona Ahmed, said she heard the event online and she was excited for the cool opportunity to hear\u00a0to President Clinton\u00a0speak.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2522.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39974 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2522-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Bill Clinton Lied Center\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2522-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2522-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2522-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2522.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt\u2019s an important opportunity that everybody should try to attend,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be a Democrat or Republican. I think everybody should come watch and see him and try to learn something new, despite what political affiliation you\u2019re in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed appreciates how\u00a0KU gives access of these events to students because she thinks it is important for her generation to learn from\u00a0his presidency. Events like this fuel student\u00a0knowledge, which will hopefully lead to more participation when the\u00a0upcoming election approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Dole Institute of Politics honored Bill Clinton\u00a0on his success towards economic expansion with the\u00a02015 Dole Leadership Prize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of us are complete economic animals,\u201d said Clinton, identifying that the challenges beyond trade, technology, cellphones and social media, which serves to push for progress.<\/p>\n<p>During the speech, Clinton also discussed\u00a0the U.S. Constitution, keeping the emphasis on bipartisanship, saying that the Constitution mandates compromise. He even subtitled the Constitution as \u201cLet\u2019s Make a Deal.&#8221; Clinton clarified\u00a0the establishment of the Judicial Branch and the procedures of veto, treaty and bill passing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2565.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-39977 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2565-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Bill Clinton Lied Center\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2565-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2565-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_2565.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Clinton spoke about\u00a0diverse representations from different groups and how they are crucial in making political decisions. He said, &#8220;We can accomplish nothing if (we\u2019re) not politically diverse,&#8221; and \u201cno matter what you are, groups make best decisions,&#8221; assuring his hope of making an inclusive society.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton donated the $25,000 prize, which comes with the award, back to the Dole Institute of Politics. The money\u00a0will help fund a women and leadership event in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The Dole Leadership Prize was previously awarded to Nelson Mandela, former U.S. Senators George McGovern and Howard Baker, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, and former President George Bush.
