Flammy Huo:<\/strong> What made you want to join KJHK?
\nRachel Benefiel:<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019m a townie so I\u2019ve been listening to KJHK for quite a while. There was also the opportunity to play weird music that I like but can’t\u00a0hear on the radio anywhere else. It really was a no brainer for me to apply.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Rachel<\/a>FH:<\/strong> What kind of music do you play and why do you like it?
\nRB:<\/strong> With Breakfast for Beatlovers, I focus mostly on electronic. I don\u2019t remember how I got into it but I just like it. Over the summer, I had a show where I played 50s\u2019 and 60s\u2019 pop music, which is kind of what I grew up listening to. My parents never listen to the modern music so I listen to the oldies station. When I\u2019ve done rotation shifts, I like the\u00a0sort of stuff KJHK plays but I also like drilling in older stuff from 70s and 80s.<\/p>\n

FH:<\/strong> So do you have a couple bands or artists that you like a lot?
\nRB:<\/strong> I do. I really like Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Depeche Mode and\u00a0The Replacements. Those are probably the big ones. I really like Cat Stevens\u00a0and\u00a0his mellow but emotional mood\u00a0too.<\/p>\n

FH:<\/strong> Do you remember how you got into them? Is there anyone who influenced you on your music choice?
\nRB:<\/strong> When I was little, my best friend and I listened to the Beatles all the time and that came from her dad. I would TiVo Vh1 Classic and\u00a0I was recording old popular songs on the program, “120 Minutes.” That\u2019s how I discovered bands\u00a0like Depeche Mode. I would be reading about them and then the other bands would be mentioned. It\u2019s just like going down a\u00a0rabbit hole.<\/p>\n

FH:<\/strong> What role does music play in your life?
\nRB:<\/strong> Music, to me, is so great because of the emotion it can cue, like sadness and happiness. It\u2019s really clich\u00e9 but it\u2019s like the soundtrack to life. There are songs that become associated with one moment and time so whenever I hear them it\u2019s like, \u201cOh yeah, I remember this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Rachel<\/a>FH:<\/strong> Do you have anything else you want to share with me about music?
\nRB:<\/strong> I have a really weird story but it\u2019s about the musical \u201cGrease,\u201d which I liked as a kid and would watch. However,\u00a0I was too young to fully understand everything. So there\u2019s the song called, \u201cLook At Me, I\u2019m Sandra Dee\u201d, and there\u2019s the line, \u201cShe won\u2019t go to bed ’til\u00a0she\u2019s legally wed.\u201d When I was little, I thought, \u201cOh jeez, she\u2019s going to stay up all night to find a husband. She is just not going to get any rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

FH:<\/strong> That\u2019s so funny. When you joined KJ, were\u00a0you just being a DJ or have you been on other staffs?
\nRB:<\/strong> I have been on the Production staff, which makes the on-air promos, and right now I\u2019m on Arts and Culture staff, which makes content\u00a0for Ad Astra Radio. Working on the production staff was fun and it helped me. I\u2019d be driving along, listening to KJ, and then I would hear my voice during the break. With Arts and Culture, I\u2019m more aware of what\u2019s going on with\u00a0KU now, looking for stories not just on campus but for other stuff that\u2019s in the community. It\u2019s just a nice community to\u00a0be a part of.<\/p>\n

FH:<\/strong> What\u2019s your favorite memory at KJ?
\nRB:<\/strong> It\u2019s the phone call. It\u2019s that drunk one. I accidentally misread the time on-air so I was just like, \u201cUgh, I\u2019m tired,\u201d and someone called in and said, \u201cThank you for doing this. It\u2019s early in the morning but thank you.\u201d Recently, someone had requested music and I found it. However, I wasn\u2019t entirely sure if it was the right band. Then I said over the air, \u201cOh, I\u2019m not cool enough to know. I\u2019m not with the kids,\u201d and then immediately I got a phone call saying, \u201c Never let anyone tell you you\u2019re not cool. You\u2019re cool!\u201d It was really sweet and funny.<\/p>\n

\"Rachel<\/a>FH:<\/strong> If you could travel back in time, which year would you go to?
\nRB:<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019ll go with 1920s. I like the pictures of it. It\u2019s so fun and jazzy with the sparkly dresses and lots of great movies coming out of Germany. I like German expression of films, which there are a\u00a0really thick amount of them in the 1920s and\u00a0into the 30s. There were also\u00a0German writers like\u00a0Kafka and Thomas Mann, which are probably my two favorites. My family is Jewish and my grandfather comes from Brooklyn so there\u2019s just all this Yiddish in his speech. Yiddish is a Germanic language so it was like, \u201cOh, this word corresponds to this.\u201d So that was fun and it made it really interesting.<\/p>\n

FH:<\/strong> Where do you see yourself in five years?
\nRB:<\/strong> I want to be working in film. I\u2019m very interested in cinematography and I would like to be\u00a0doing something like that or on the path to that. Cinematography is the art of photography so there’s the\u00a0lights, camera, lenses, and film stocks. I\u2019m probably not going to learn about film stocks so it will really be more about creating the visual environment. When I watch movies, that has the greatest impact on me. It\u2019s like it can suck me into the movie and make it feel like a real world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
