Enthusiasts of his early work will be satisfied by this album as well.
3. “Tough Enough” EP by Toughies
Local Lawrence act, Toughies, released my favorite EP of the year. This Lawrence rock act effectively made me sit and cry, only to later get up and dance, while in the shower. All in ten minutes! The second track, “What Are Hands For?,” makes me imagine the high school prom dance that I never attended. The track is playful and sensual, yet insecure (the prime definition of DJ Uncle Jesse). Overall, this album appeals to a large part of the emotional spectrum that we experience on a daily basis. The soft rock vibes, beautiful vocal delivery and memorable lyrics will stay with you forever…in a great way.
4. “Sour Soul” – Ghostface Killah and BADBADNOTGOOD
The collaboration between these two results in an amazing album, “Sour Soul.” BBNG puts you in a flow that will last hours after the album and Ghostface Killah’s lines will leave you thinking about the state of our world until you go to sleep. The album even has memorable appearances from guests, including solid tracks such as, “Six Degrees (featuring Danny Brown),” “Ray Gun (featuring DOOM),” and “Gunshowers (featuring Elzhi).” For BBNG’s instrumental fans, “Starks Reality” is a well-paced and darkingly enchanting track that will make the listener feel as if they are in a world of a 50’s film noir.
5. “Viet Cong” – Viet Cong
Viet Cong’s self-titled release is a fast-paced and dark album that actually fueled my quest to better myself as a human being. Despite the offensive and culturally appropriated band name, which the band has announced will change, this album offers plenty of thought and self-reflection through dark and violent depictions of human nature. The entire album, including tracks like, “Continental Shelf,” “Bunker Buster,” “Silhouettes,” and “Pointless Experience,” offers brooding lyrics and gritty instrumental images that motivated me to push myself in aspects in which I needed improvement. The lyrical composition meshes incredibly well with Matt Flegel’s dark vocals. The album also offers moments of serenity and reflection in tracks such as “March of Progress” and “Death.” Overall, this is a great album for fans who are into a harsher side emotional motivational and a darker instrumental atmosphere.
6. “Songs from the (quaking) Heart” – Paul Doffing
Paul Doffing’s tour this year was a complete bike tour, all while playing music from his most recent album. I had the privilege of meeting him and watching him perform tracks from this album at Folk Fest 2015 in Kansas City. The title-track kicks off hot and bitter and comes full circle with its gritty and edgy ending tracks like “Glore.” They are a well-rounded group, which is amazing considering how young they are. “Le Song” and “Parade It” encompasses the musical talent, song-writing ability, and emotional impact these musicians hold. This album is fun, it is loud, angry and only the beginning for this young group.
8. “Stuff Like That There” - Yo La Tengo
Fans of Yo La Tengo’s older material will listen to this album fondly, remembering previous works of this same tone. And I am honestly a fan of it. Especially when it involves brutally honest yet endearing tracks like, “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone,” “Multi-Love,” and “Extreme Wealth and Casual Cruelty.” Ruban Neilson’s vocals flow incredibly well with the upbeat delivery and are the real key of why the album works. Some of the most impactful songs include, “New Day Dawning,” “Nuclear Radiation,” “Slow I Go,” and “Reason.” The album opens with a cold and slow reasoning of lives meaning and it picks up from there.
7. “Dark Black Makeup” – Radkey
Radkey’s new album is easily the most aggressive album on my list (next to Viet Cong). And that is honestly all the aggression I need in 2015.
This album contains some amazing covers, including the incredibly popular “Friday I’m In Love”, “Naples,” and the ending track, “Somebody’s In Love.” This album continues this list’s recurring theme of music you want to listen to in bed or when it rains. The acoustic sensitivity to your heart is felt in every track, and it cuts deeper with every passing chorus.
9. “Ratchet” - Shamir
Shamir’s “Ratchet” is probably the most fun on the list. Every time the album starts, I can’t help but imagine a montage of fast clips covering the seedy yet hip world of Las Vegas. The album truly lifts off for the stars with the next few tracks, including hits like “Call It Off,” “On the Regular,” and “Make a Scene.” This album is a real dozy and invigorates energy that won’t expire until the beats and Shamir’s amazing vocal delivery end.
10. “Multi-Love” – Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “Multi-Love,” is a step away from their psychedelic, lo-fi side and more into the indie-pop, funk realm. The lyrics retain the classic UMO themes but with a beat that makes me shuffle my feet and genuinely want to carry a conversation with a stranger. Overall, the album is a great addition to UMO’s discography and makes me eager to see where they will go in the future.
"]" data-sheets-userformat="[null,null,513,[null,0],null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,0]">
Shamir’s “Ratchet“ is probably the most fun on the list.
