SUA sponsored the event and had volunteers hand out pamphlets that give a little bit of Tometi&#8217;s personal history, as well helping direct\u00a0everyone to the main theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb Stevenson<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-42687 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4834-300x284.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4834\" width=\"300\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4834-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4834-768x726.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_4834-1024x968.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>, Activist of the Lawrence community, explained\u00a0why he came out to the lecture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is one of the most important things in the United States and as a person of color and a member of Rock Chalk Invisible hawk.&#8221; Stevenson said.<\/p>\n<p>He is involved in the city commission and stands for the voices of the oppressed and marginalized. \u00a0Other attendees had different things to say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope it&#8217;s not the usual,&#8221;Dolorus Fuller, member of the Lawrence community, said. &#8220;A\u00a0whole lot of talking and no doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scanning the audience, there were many different kinds of people\u00a0supporting this event as Opal Tometi took the stage. She started out showing\u00a0a music video titled &#8220;Welcome to America&#8221;by Lecrae and from there began to explain a little bit about her past and how the movement was started.<\/p>\n<p>Tometi talked about a variety of subjects, from talking about how her little brother being\u00a0bullied growing up for &#8220;being black&#8221;\u00a0to the Trayvon Martin case from 2012.\u00a0Tometi said that all of this sparked her to speak out and do something about the injustice, which was the start of the Black Lives Matter movement. She was sure to emphasize her desire for global effects, starting in America.\u00a0Tometi&#8217;s parents were immigrants from Nigeria and she wishes to see global change on how we look at blackness. She repeatedly emphasized the words\u00a0&#8220;tonight is a call to action&#8221; with\u00a0a Martin Luther King, Jr. quote always in her background\u00a0reading &#8220;Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Q and A after the speech ran longer than Tometi speaking by herself and proved just how active the Lawrence community is to end racial injustice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Feb.\u00a024 Opal Tometi,\u00a0Co-Founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, gave a\u00a0lecture at the Lied Center.
