{"id":43562,"date":"2016-03-24T17:40:39","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T22:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=43562"},"modified":"2016-03-24T17:40:39","modified_gmt":"2016-03-24T22:40:39","slug":"hop-along-get-disowned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2016\/03\/24\/hop-along-get-disowned\/","title":{"rendered":"Hop Along: Get Disowned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium alignright wp-image-43563\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/4063752.png?fit=300%2C300\" alt=\"4063752\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/4063752.png 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/4063752-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/4063752-125x125.png 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Saddle Creek\u2019s re-release of Hop Along\u2019s first full-length, <em>Get Disowned<\/em>, is immensely exciting.\u00a0Frances Quinlan has a gritty wail at some moments and soft singing at others, vocals when paired with the tight instrumental backup and thoughtful lyrics make Hop Along one of indie-rock\u2019s best (and arguably most underrated) bands.<\/p>\n<p>Lyrics like \u201cso unhappy child, flash me your Rottweiler smile\u201d from &#8220;Diamond Mine&#8221; and \u201cmy love is average, I obey an average law\u201d from &#8220;Tibetan Pop Stars&#8221; simultaneously send chills down your spine and make you want to be screaming along at their live shows. &#8220;Kids on the Boardwalk&#8221; is a \u00a0hilarious track telling the story of how kids fall in love for silly reasons, ending\u00a0with \u201cI want truth in beauty\/ I want to love someone simply\/ I want truth in beauty\/ I want to love someone without them having to need me.\u201d Whoa buddy. This album is effortlessly funny while also addressing heavy subjects like death, break-ups, neglect, love, and loneliness. &#8220;Laments&#8221; is\u00a0narrated by the\u00a0mattress of a couple that is breaking up, a unique fly on the wall perspective that still feels deeply\u00a0involved.<\/p>\n<p>Though Hop Along\u2019s sophomore album garnered more critical acclaim far more quickly, Saddle Creek\u2019s re-release may just give <em>Get Disowned<\/em> the attention it deserved four years ago.
