The May 2nd show featuring the recently reunited Guided By Voices was a\u00a0pleaser in the sense that it gave their fans exactly what they wanted.\u00a0Although there was only a moderate attendance at The Bottleneck, the prolific rock band\u00a0supplied all of the classics of a Guided By Voices show: Scissor kicks, mass consumption\u00a0of Miller Lite, tequila bottle sharing, humorous between song banter, and a\u00a0hefty 51 song set.<\/p>\n
The banter highlight came about a third of the way through, when Pollard\u00a0was commenting on\u00a0Lawrence. Acknowledging the city\u2019s basketball\u00a0tradition, he noted \u201cI really like the Jayhawks\u2019 coach. What is his name\u00a0again? Oh yeah… it\u2019s Bill go f*** yourSelf.\u201d Instead of booing (Which Pollard\u00a0expected, when he said \u201cYou\u2019re supposed to boo that!\u201d immediately\u00a0afterwards), the crowd merely gave out big, hearty laughs.<\/p>\n
Song wise, fans seemed uncertain as to\u00a0whether or not Pollard and his\u00a0group of fresh faces would be able to fill the void left by departing members\u00a0Mitch Mitchell, Kevin Fennell, Tobin Sprout, and Greg Demos. It\u00a0became clear quickly that returning drummer Kevin\u00a0March, new guitarists Bobby Bare and Nick Mitchell, and new bassist Mark\u00a0Shue had the chops to keep up with Pollard\u2019s ability to breeze through a\u00a0lengthy setlist. The setlist included a good amount of what one would expect,\u00a0with a significant portion coming from new release Please Be Honest<\/em>, as well\u00a0as some off of the classic Bee Thousand<\/em> and a few of Pollard\u2019s solo efforts.<\/p>\n However, Guided By Voices threw a couple curveballs, such as a cover of The Who\u2019s\u00a0\u201cBaba O\u2019Riley\u201d. The fresh faces allowed Pollard to take charge with the\u00a0theatrics for the most part, although in the second half of the set, the\u00a0charisma of the rest of the group\u00a0started to show more.<\/p>\n This all led to an energetic and passionate crowd, most of whom probably\u00a0had seen Guided By Voices before. Despite playing only a meager 2\u00ad3% of their\u00a0discography, fans\u00a0knew the lyrics to most of the songs, evident by\u00a0the amount of sing-\u00adalongs that broke out throughout the show.
