{"id":48830,"date":"2016-09-22T10:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T15:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=48830"},"modified":"2016-09-22T16:10:57","modified_gmt":"2016-09-22T21:10:57","slug":"super-service-saturday-brings-ku-students-into-the-lawrence-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2016\/09\/22\/super-service-saturday-brings-ku-students-into-the-lawrence-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Service Saturday Brings KU Students into the Lawrence Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49500 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9376-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"img_9376\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9376-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9376-768x494.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9376-100x65.jpg 100w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9376.jpg 932w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> Super Service Saturday was launched during the Hawk Week on August 27th to introduce KU students to community service in Lawrence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Center for Community Outreach&#8217;s (CCO) \u00a0largest event of the year, Super Service Saturday is a volunteer opportunity that buses KU students to varyious locations around Lawrence to work with local non-profit organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Executive Director of \u00a0CCO Ike Uri said Super Service Saturday began not long after the birth of CCO, and while the structure of the event has remained consistent, one of the main focuses of recent years for CCO is on improving the quality of students\u2019 volunteer experience by adding an educational portion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want people to connect with non-profits and learn about a specific cause or problem in the Lawrence community that those non-profits are working to solve\u2026 (each site) has an educational component\u2026 It\u2019s part of a collaborative adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CCO worked with 24 non-profit organizations this year, and the process of selecting those organizations involves almost every <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49503 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9391-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"img_9391\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9391-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9391-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9391-100x65.jpg 100w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9391.jpg 930w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>registered non-profit in Douglas county.<\/p>\n<p>Uri emphasized that although the preparation is fun, it involves difficulties and hard work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quite a process,\u201d Uri said, \u201cOne thing that we focus on is matching community needs with our needs\u2026 We\u2019re trying to get as many people into quality volunteering slots, but we can\u2019t always do that\u2026 because their size really can\u2019t handle that many volunteers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ike also mentioned the struggles fundraising with state cutting back the funding for KU, saying\u00a0<\/span>\u201cwe\u2019ve really had a difficult time getting enough funding for this event, but we\u2019ve managed to pull through. That was the biggest challenge this year was finding the money for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Freshman are the target participants of the Hawk Week. It is the only Hawk Week event that focuses on experiential learning and hollistic learning throught community service. Freshman Quinton Jones one of the thousand students that participated, volunteered at Lawrence Community Shelter.<\/p>\n<p>Jones said his group helped build heavy-duty shelves and organized cans and groceries. He said it\u2019s rewarding to do something that can benefit the community.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49502 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9382-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"img_9382\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9382-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9382-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9382-100x65.jpg 100w, https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_9382.jpg 930w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cIt teaches you that there are so much more to life than just our own personal goals and the things we strive for,\u201d Jones said, \u201cit\u2019s something that everybody should try to do to give to people who are less fortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kitchen Manager of the shelter Logan Elder said student volunteers are very helpful especially when they lack human resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe kitchen itself doesn\u2019t run without volunteers, and the warehouse definitely doesn\u2019t run without man power,\u201d Elder said, \u201cThe shelter is always lacking a substantial amount of man power, and it\u2019s nice to have this many people out here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Elder, students are always energetic and eager to learn about what they do, see more, and get involved. He also said Super Service Saturday often encourages people to volunteer more, and they need people to come back because students are the shelter\u2019s \u201clifeblood\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Freshman Macie Clawson, volunteered at Boys and Girls club. She helped with maintenance and built games for the kids.
