DJ Show:<\/strong> Monday 3-6 a.m., Jazz in the Morning (Monday 6-9 a.m.)<\/p>\n

Lily Grant:<\/strong> When and why did you join KJHK?<\/p>\n

Sophie Johnson:<\/strong> I was at Java Break and on a whim I was like, “I need to be more social at KU, I don\u2019t really do anything.” Then I was like “Oh, music\u2019s cool. Being a DJ would be cool.” So I just randomly applied and they called me with a lot of openings that I could be part of so I did two of them because I\u2019m part-time at KU. I know that Jazz in the Morning is a big thing that a lot of people listen to and I thought it would be cool to do that and explore jazz more, because I didn\u2019t really listen to it before this.<\/p>\n

LG:<\/strong> And now you do?<\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> Yeah, now it\u2019s a huge part of my life! I have to listen to so much jazz to create these playlists. It\u2019s been a really positive thing. I didn\u2019t realize how music could influence my life the way it did.<\/p>\n

\"SophieLG:<\/strong> What was your first impression of KJHK when you joined?<\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> Super scary! It was so much. Everything is high-tech and there\u2019s a lot of buttons. Turns out, you don\u2019t have to press like any of the buttons except one. It all went over my head when the programming director explained it, I thought, “I\u2019m going to forget all of this”.<\/p>\n

LG:<\/strong> I thought the same thing.<\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong>\u00a0Then they told me\u00a0“Your first show is on Monday, you\u2019re gonna be here at 6 a.m., and you\u2019re gonna be here by yourself”. And I was like *giggles* “Cool”.<\/p>\n

LG:<\/strong> And how\u2019d your first shift go?<\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> It was a rocky start, because I slept through twenty minutes of it.<\/p>\n

LG:<\/strong> Oh no!<\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> Yeah. I freaked out and I thought I was going to make KJHK lose their license because we weren\u2019t going to be on air, but it was fine. The playlist kept going and I\u2019m sure not many people were listening at 6 a.m.<\/p>\n

LG: Why do you think being a KJHK DJ is important?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> Oh man! It super connects you to the community. I didn\u2019t know it would, but when I mention to people that I do Jazz in the Morning for KJHK, they\u2019re like, “Oh wow! That\u2019s cool! I also listen to jazz!” I\u2019d always thought of jazz as a kind of, um\u2026 old person thing to listen to.<\/p>\n

LG:<\/strong> Mmhmm, mature listening\u2026<\/p>\n

SJ:\u00a0<\/strong>It turns out, a lot of people listen to it, and it\u2019s fun to get suggestions from others and make connections that way. And people actually recognize my voice from the show, which is so cool. Being shy and anti-social, it\u2019s great, because I can just sit back here and not talk to anyone, yet still be out in the open.<\/p>\n

LG: What would the name of your debut album be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SJ<\/strong>: A Soapy John<\/i><\/p>\n

LG:<\/strong> What kind of music would it be?<\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> It would be super funky! Or just straight up 80s music.<\/p>\n

LG: What\u2019s your favorite song at the moment?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> This sounds really weird, but it\u2019s probably \u201cDon\u2019t You Want Me\u201d by The Human League, like the 80s song. I could be in the worst mood ever, listen to that song, and then I\u2019m alright!<\/p>\n

\"\"LG: Favorite album?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> The Epic<\/i> by Kamazi Washington. There\u2019s a lot of diversity and songs with vocals, like \u201cCherokee.\u201d<\/p>\n

LG: What is a song that you’re embarrassed to like, but secretly jam out to in your car or shower?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> Oh my god it\u2019s totally the Aly & AJ \u201cPotential Breakup Song.\u201d I\u2019m so into it, I could listen to that on repeat forever. My life is literally chock-full of boy drama, so why would I not listen to that?<\/p>\n

LG: Why are you majoring in art education?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> Being around kids gives me so much energy in a good way. I just see these young innocent minds and it\u2019s just so beautiful and pure to be around. Being able to impact kids\u2019 lives and show them how art can be a form of expression for them and impact their lives would be really important and meaningful. I want to do art with kids that affects the community.<\/p>\n

LG: What are some words you live by?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SJ:<\/strong> This year I\u2019ve realized that there\u2019s nothing that time doesn\u2019t heal. Time can seem to go by slowly, but it actually goes by super fast and then I\u2019m not even thinking about it anymore and I really can move on from most things.
