{"id":77282,"date":"2021-04-21T12:13:53","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T17:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=77282"},"modified":"2021-04-21T12:51:51","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T17:51:51","slug":"child-abuse-reports-drastically-drop-in-kansas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2021\/04\/21\/child-abuse-reports-drastically-drop-in-kansas\/","title":{"rendered":"Child abuse reports drastically drop in Kansas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Fabian Rosales <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cA year ago we all basically saw that there would probably be a downturn in case filings\u201d- Paul Klepper, District Court Judge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past year, there\u2019s been a drastic decrease in reported child abuse cases in the United States and Kansas saw a 26% decrease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that there\u2019s less child abuse and neglect, in fact, there\u2019s probably, almost certainly more,\u201d said Douglas County District Court Judge Paul Klepper. \u201cWe just know less about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video autoplay controls src=\"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Child-Abuse-KJHK-1.mov\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID-19 has caused people to work and learn from home. With children learning from home, they\u2019re less around adults who would notice any signs of abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you don\u2019t have kids psychically in school, they\u2019re not around mandated reporters,\u201d said Chief Assistant District Attorney Katy Britton. \u201cA lot of the ways DCF [Department for Children and Families] gets told about potential abuse neglect issues is from teachers and therapists and counselors at school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/today.law.harvard.edu\/will-online-schooling-increase-child-abuse-risks\/\">Harvard Law Today<\/a>, the stress that the pandemic has put on the parents: employment, housing and ability to feed their kids put children at a higher risk of abuse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think we will collectively feel this for years to come unfortunately,\u201d said Britton.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Fabian Rosales \u201cA year ago we all basically saw that there would probably be a downturn in case filings\u201d- Paul Klepper, District Court Judge.
