{"id":81614,"date":"2024-11-11T10:57:06","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T16:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/?p=81614"},"modified":"2024-11-19T10:22:08","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T16:22:08","slug":"81614","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjhk.org\/web\/2024\/11\/11\/81614\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s Basketball Starts Off Season 1-0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Atticai Margave | cai.margave@ku.edu<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Led by S\u2019Mya Nichols&#8217; 20 points, Kansas started off their season with a home win over<br \/>\nLindenwood on Wednesday with a final score of 56-43.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Looking to build on her All-Big 12 First Team season last year, Nichols led the team in both<br \/>\npoints and assists putting up 20 and five on the night.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although the Jayhawks did come out with a win, both Nichols and Coach Schneider saw<br \/>\nroom to improve after the team\u2019s performance. They both agreed that toughness was the key<br \/>\narea where the team needed to step up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur defense was good,\u201d Nichols said, \u201cbut we just need to work on some toughness<br \/>\naspects.\u201d Coach Schneider saw much of the same, \u201cWe didn\u2019t out-tough them,\u201d he said, \u201cthey<br \/>\nout-toughed us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although the team did not seem pleased with their performance, they were still able to hold<br \/>\nLindenwood was under 30% shooting from the field and forced 14 turnovers. They did this even without senior guard Wyvette Mayberry, who Nichols described as a defensive dog.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first-half defense was especially stifling, holding the Lions to just 11 points. This allowed the Jayhawks to go on a 15-0 scoring run in the second quarter fueled by a pair of threes<br \/>\nmade by Creighton transfer Brittany Harshaw.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the 20 points from Nichols, freshman forward Regan Williams tallied 11 points<br \/>\nand Harshaw added nine points, hitting three of her first five three-point attempts, to go with<br \/>\nnine rebounds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kansas\u2019 next game will be Monday, November 11 when Sam Houston State comes to Allen<br \/>\nFieldhouse for a 6:30 p.m. game.
