On Friday, November 8th, the 2025 Grammy Nominations were announced, and the KJHK Executive Staff members have some THOUGHTS. The following results include our predications and opinions about some of the 2025 Grammy Noms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ALBUM OF THE YEAR:<\/strong><\/p>\n

New Blue Sun<\/em> by Andr\u00e9 3000<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Although we ultimately found a clear winner here, one Exec Staffer felt that this list was not representative of the truly best albums of 2024 and points to issues within the broader academy:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cChromakopia<\/em> should be album of the year ngl, but ever since they gave best album to Macklemore that one year, I’ve lost hope in humanity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SONG OF THE YEAR:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Please Please Please” by Sabrina Carpenter (et. al)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As KJHK is a radio station dedicated to \u201cthe sound alternative,\u201d we don\u2019t always engage with more mainstream music. That being said, Sabrina Carpenter\u2019s Short n Sweet<\/em>\u00a0LP caught many an alternative staffer by surprise in how much they enjoyed its sickly sweet poppiness. Because of this, \u201cPlease Please Please\u201d was voted \u201cSong of the Year\u201d by Executive Staffers.<\/span><\/p>\n

RECORD OF THE YEAR:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan<\/span><\/p>\n

(We love you Chappell)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST NEW ARTIST:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chappell Roan<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

(We love you Chappell pt. 2)<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussion about who is this year\u2019s \u201cBest New Artist\u201d can bring up snubs of Grammy\u2019s past. One staffer writes of their favorite artist:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMitski has never been nominated for a Grammy and I’m mad about it!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess <\/em>– Chappell Roan<\/p>\n

(We love you Chappell pt. 3)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST DANCE\/ELECTRONIC ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brat<\/em> by Charli XCX<\/p>\n

To the surprise of no one, Brat<\/em> is the winner in this category. Especially over the summer, Charli XCX’s party-centric, yet surprisingly vulnerable album quickly gained traction around the station. (Isn’t it crazy how Google Forms didn’t make Brat<\/em>‘s color green though… I’m kind of mad about it).<\/span><\/p>\n

BEST ROCK ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Probably the most divisive category for our station, the title for the \u201cBest Rock Album\u201d remains unclaimed…<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST ALTERNATIVE MUSIC ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Charm<\/em> by Clairo<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

BIG Clairo fans \u2018round here! Can\u2019t you tell?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST PROGRESSIVE R&B<\/strong> ALBUM:<\/p>\n

Bando Stone and the New World<\/em>\u00a0by Childish Gambino<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Childish Gambino has been a fan favorite of KJHKers for years, and this album (like the rest of his discography) landed particularly with our Exec Staffers this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST R&B ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coming Home<\/em> by Usher<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!\u00a0… usher usher.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST RAP ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Although Doechii\u2019s Alligator Bites Never Heal<\/em> and The Auditorium, Vol. 1<\/em>\u00a0by Common & Pete Rock were tied for Exec Staff\u2019s pick for Best Rap Album, one Executive Staffer spoke one why the tie should be broken:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCommon and Pete Rock\u2019s The Auditorium, Vol. 1<\/em> manages to completely innovate the rap sound while still being so reminiscent of classic Hip Hop music. The duo have been making hit after hit for nearly three decades now. Even though they\u2019re not going to be the most popular choice, I believe their record is by far the most special.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST AMERICANA ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tigers Blood\u00a0<\/em>by Waxahatchee<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Another close category here, but we have a winner! Tigers Blood<\/em>\u00a0by Waxahatchee (widely recognized around the station as one of Programming Director, Gracie Hughes\u2019s favorite albums of all time) beat out some other really fantastic Americana LPs. \u2018Twas a great year for the Americana genre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST FOLK<\/strong> ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bright Future\u00a0<\/em>by Adrianne Lenker<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

An overwhelming KJHK favorite, Adrianne Lenker\u2019s Bright Future<\/em> was many staffers\u2019 favorite album of the year, even beyond the folk category.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BEST COMPILATION SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Saltburn<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Not only are we audiophiles but cinephiles, as well! A majority of staffers preferred Saltburn\u2019s soundtrack over others nominated for the \u201cBest Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media\u201d category. This is not to say it was our absolute favorite, but some of us really enjoyed the resurgence of Sophie Ellis-Baxter\u2019s 2002 banger, \u201cMurder on the Dancefloor,\u201d in mainstream listening (thanks TikTok!).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and last but not least…\u00a0BEST ALTERNATIVE JAZZ ALBUM:<\/strong><\/p>\n

New Blue Sun\u00a0<\/em>by Andr\u00e9 3000<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

ANDR\u00c9 3000 IS BACK! And with some absolutely killer flutes. In my opinion, this is by far one of the coolest albums up for nomination this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

___<\/span><\/p>\n

In gathering the opinions for this article, we asked staffers to write any additional concerns, opinions, and\/or feelings they may have regarding The Grammys. Especially for a station dedicated to bringing smaller, alternative, and more obscure artists to the fore, The Grammys can often feel like a punch in the gut.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One staffer wrote about how they are \u201cvery concerned with how often the Grammys seems to prioritize white artists in both nominations and wins over people of color.\u201d Additionally, the number of queer and\/or anti-mainstream artists that are nominated\/win their nominations continues to be small.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is likely why one staff member just said \u201c(starts barking aggressively)\u201d when asked about how they feel about The Grammys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While it\u2019s fun to speculate and vote for who we hope may win in a certain category, ultimately, it may be a disheartening result come February, seeing as The Academy has and continues to deem the songs, artists, and records \u201cthe best,\u201d when really they\u2019re the most popular (aka most conforming) among mainstream listenership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
