When our gang of people would go out to the bars in Lawrence, back in the 90s, Angie was always late. She would show up late every time, and her and her boyfriend would always giggle about it. I would always say “Angie, why are you always late?” She would say, “Oh, I was just fighting crime.” I thought Angie Fights Crime was a cool name.

How would you define your music?

We have a lot of different styles and a lot of different genres that we like to mix around. Our current album is alternative indie rock, it’s got some interesting themes. I would say our music is rock and roll with an underground twist to it.

What inspires you to make music?

I write music because that’s what I do. What inspires me is the world that I live in, my life, my marriage, my job, the news, the world, if I go to an island in Greece and see something that beautiful inspires me, a little kid running and dropping their ice cream and starting to cry–that kind of inspires me sometimes.

Do you have a favorite song you’ve made or a song that you’re most excited to play at Farmer’s Ball?

This new album, which is called To Be Beautiful, came out on Valentine’s Day. It’s got a lot of songs on there that I really like. I would say that “Between the Mountain and Sea” is one that I’m particularly proud about. It’s a song that’s got a lot of thought behind it, and instrumentally, it’s pretty good. It sounds great live.

What is the ultimate goal of your band?

The band is a conduit, for all of us, to get out of our house and play music for a live audience. That’s the goal.

If you win Farmer’s Ball, how would you celebrate?

My favorite brewery is Free State Brewery, which is next door to Liberty Hall. We’ll celebrate by congratulating our fellow musicians. I know a lot of them personally, and they’re all amazing. Anybody out of that group would deserve to win this contest. We’re not doing this to win the main prize, we’re doing this to play our music and let people who would never know that we exist see us play.

Angie Fights Crime is one of the eight acts battling for one of the four spots in the Farmer’s Ball Finals!
