How about a folk vibe that makes you feel like autumn is the time to fall in love? Well, I highly suggest you listen to Squirrel Flower. This indie rock and folk band incorporates beautiful instrumental with powerful lyrics; together they create an ethereal feeling deep in your chest. They will be taking the stage in Lawrence at The White Schoolhouse on Oct. 24. This band is the project of songwriter and musician Ella O’Conner Williams; the name Squirrel Flower comes from a childhood alter ego and nickname. I find the name quite charming, but not as much as these awesome tunes.

My first time listening to Squirrel Flower was earlier this week; however, I wish I had listened to them sooner. I would compare their sound to that of Big Thief and Mitski, but don’t let this fool you; they definitely have a unique vibe. I find much of their music calming, and I will incorporate them into my playlist for yearning. If you’re big into yearning, Squirrel Flower is for you. Some of my favorites include “Finally Rain,” “Alley Light” and “Conditions.”

When looking at “Finally Rain,” I noticed a rhythmic use of repetition that I found to be very enticing. In this song, William’s voice goes from soft to full of emotion in a natural fashion. While listening, you start to feel as if you’re floating, looking over a rainy lake while going through a quarter-life crisis. I especially enjoy the guitar riff around the three-minute mark, as it can be taken as screaming about the frustrations of life and growing up.

Next up on my favorites list is “Alley Light.” Juxtaposed to “Finally Rain,” this song has a louder rock sound. This song has elegantly done queer themes that make you feel in love vicariously. When listening, I get the picture of a Midwestern queer story full of turmoil and flirtatious gestures. The louder rock sound gives a more intense vibe; coupled with the beautiful vocals, you get a sense of longing and romance.

Lastly, I want to talk about the song Conditions. In this one, Ella’s voice really reminds me of Mitski. The lyrics really stand out in this one and have a strong impact. This song doesn’t have many words to it, but because of this, they put more emphasis on what the song could mean. This song seems to cover the fear of commitment and the resentment that can come with that. The repetition of the line, “Don’t you dare say you do not know me,” at the end of the song leaves you with a feeling of passion mixed with possessiveness. I enjoy the complexity of this song and the folk-rock instrumental.

Although I’m a new listener of Squirrel Flower, I highly recommend giving them a listen. Their indie rock/folk sound is pretty grooving, and the emotion put into each song is highly impressive. I’m glad to have had the opportunity to listen to Squirrel Flower, and I hope my favorites can demonstrate the range this incredible band has. They are a great pick to enhance the feeling of autumn this year and, overall, a great pick year-round.

Do you enjoy the feeling of floating?
