Name, grade, position at KJHK?
Olivia Jones, Senior

Host of “Decades of Dance” & former Live Music Coordinator for SUA-KJHK

Tell us about your show?

“Decades of Dance” originated late my freshman year (probably, April of 2017). I was a rookie DJ, and therefore, given a less desirable timeslot – 9-midnight on Saturdays. I had a rotational show, but frankly, I’ve never been one to follow the rules so I started playing disco music and was told by the Programming Director to keep it up, rather than stop. Long story short, I realized that there wasn’t really a ‘dance’ program on KJHK, and I actually really liked the late-night time slot, so “Decades of Dance” was born: a late-night dance show, featuring everything from disco to ’90s boy bands and Elvis Presley. About a year later, I convinced my twin brother, Spencer, to be my co-host.

What’s your favorite part about hosting it?

I love hosting “Decades of Dance” because it’s just a feel-good show. The music is fun and upbeat, and pre-COVID, I’d bring my friends and our mic breaks became our everyday conversations – almost nothing was off-limits, both musically and conversationally. I learned about the craziest things people have done to impress a crush (joining the Farmers Association of America is a major commitment), to hosting rap battles, to taste-testing Japanese snacks, to debating whether or not fish are better than babies (and no, it doesn’t make any more sense in context). On top of that, I’ll likely be playing ABBA, Britney Spears and The Clash in the same set.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Lawrence?

Favorite restaurant in LFK is a tough choice, but honestly, I think I find myself at the Burger Stand more often than not. That might be because my friends and I can never make a decision about where to go eat, but it’s always delicious. Mad Greek is up there, too, and I will forever miss Wake the Dead.

Decades of Dance airs on Saturday nights 10-midnight.
