Ryan Lott’s third album is all at once dreamy, gritty, and otherworldly, taking the listener on a strange, paradoxical journey. Joyful Noise Recordings calls the album “a peculiar congruency between futuristic soul and ancient sentiment” and I can’t imagine a better description. The album brings together an impressive cooperative of artists, including Peter Silberman, Darren King, DM Stith, and Sufjan Stevens. This is not an album you can listen to casually. Rather, you have to get lost in it. The standout track on the album is the second, “Lost It to Trying”; it’s a thundering, brassy track filled with a flirtation between chaos and technicality. Track 8 also deserves a special mention: “Plan the Escape” is five and a half minutes of imaginative, desperately hopeful space, followed by the haunting, titular conclusion to the album: “Lanterns Lit”. The album is definitely worth listening to from start to finish.
