Karen O: Crush Songs

Listening to this album was like having a crush on these Crush Songs.

Infamous Frontwoman of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O, has produced the best recorded-at-home style collections I’ve listened to in a long time.  These songs were written when she was 27 while surfing the waves of several crushes.  This is an album made up of short bursts of emotion and longing.  That iconic voice so often heard leading bombastic anthems is here mellow and pure, backed by simple guitar chords.

Each song is simple and short.  “Ooo” opens the album with a lighthearted ode.  The following tracks slow down and discuss the dark moments of crushes.  By the time “Day Go By” came by, I was ready for its return to the positive parts of crushing.  “Ooo,” “NYC Baby,” “Day Go By,” “Sunset Sun” are most definitely the best songs on this album.   They leave you intrigued, obsessed, and wanting more.  Listening to this album was like having a crush on these Crush Songs.
