Here we have SZA, a 23 year old singer-songwriter straight out of New Jersey paving the way for the future of R&B. Gaining recognition for being the only female and singer on one of the hottest labels in the game, Top Dawg Entertainment, also home to iconic rapper Kendrick Lamar, as well as Schoolboy Q and Isaiah Rashad.

is SZA’s third EP and her first release on Top Dawg Entertainment. Hands down one of my favorite albums of 2014, Z incorporates aspects of hip hop, R&B, soul, and touches of indie pop in all the right places. SZA has a gift in storytelling, as her songs transcend the listening experience, taking you to the warmest place of grand nostalgia. Child’s Play is a XXYYXX produced track, featuring Chance the Rapper, which blends SZA’s soft warmth with Chance’s playful lyricism that takes you back to those teenage summer days. HiiiJack, produced by Toro Y Moi, is a great up-beat change of pace, connecting the album together.

SZA’s first two EP’s See.SZA.Run and are both unique entities that definitely deserve the first spin, that will lead to devoted listenings. Z is definitely more refined and more of a mature album. As SZA continues to rapidly evolve, she is definitely a contender to take note of.
