For The Record

Down With Cover Slips

Despite the time it took to accumulate, my collection of cover slips had to go back to the record store. Since beginning my personal stack in 2011, I thought it was terribly important to protect every record I ever bought with a plastic shield, but I’ve changed my mind, and I’ll tell you why.

1) The artwork looks better without a raincoat.

2) Your records from fifty years ago still look fine, and who knows the last time they wore protection?

3) Try selecting and replacing records stored in a row on a shelf, where all you can see are the spines. It’s terrible, and it’s all because of the cover slips.

4) It’s plastic.

5) The feel of a cover matters. Some feel so good you want to touch your face with them.

Give her a try. Let your records breathe. I think you’ll find the experience enhanced.
