Sultry lyrics, layers of gorgeous vocals, pulsing beats and atmosphere only begin to describe the lush work of art that is Yuck. Alpine is a sextet from Melbourne, Australia. They have gained a notable following with their first album A is For Alpine. On their sophomore effort they show depth and maturity while sticking close to their signature beat driven pop. This album is funky, oh so funky. And it drips with lust, love, and attraction. But this isn’t a clichéd girl breaks up with boy album. It is more about personal struggles than ex-boyfriends. “Up For Air” has a back beat that just won’t quit but the groove is deliberately slow. “Jellyfish” is an electronica masterpiece with samples, synths and reverb. The lyrics are metaphoric, mysterious and mesmerizing. “Damn Baby” grabs you with rap horns but makes you stay with a soulful groove and sensual lyrics. It’s so sexy. “Foolish” is the main single with its catchy melody and danceable groove. The opening track “Come On” is incredibly adventurous and enthralling.
Phoebe Baker and Lou James complement each other in every way from harmonies to lyrics. The band knows how to craft an album. No note, synth or beat is out of place. It is precise and dazzling.
