Paper Plains Zine Fest 2024

BY EMMA CURRAN

Paper Plains Zine Fest is an annual festival that celebrates local art all around Lawrence. The event is sponsored by 15 different local businesses and organizations, and gives space for local artists, new, old, amatuer or experienced. It introduces people to the wide range of the art scene in town, and as an artist myself, it is so fun to see artists who have worked so hard get to be recognized for their efforts.

Zines, if you haven’t heard the word before, come from the short of “magazine” or “fan-zine”. However, unlike magazines, zines are usually hand made and one of a kind. But there is no limit to what a zine can consist of, whether it be drawings, photographs, paintings, cat selfies, or tik tok screenshots. Although I’ve never seen any zine made with the latter of those. I think I’ll get on that.

One of the reasons that zine fest is so great is because it showcases the amazing versatility of artists. Art can be a hobby or a profession or anything far and few between for you, but you’d still have a place at zine fest.

This year marks the 3rd annual Paper Plains Zine Fest, and this year marks the first year that KJHK was not only present, but was also a participant. Check out some of our amazing content staffers zines from this year!
