How would you describe your music?

I usually say indie folk rock. I go in between folk and indie rock and mesh them together.

How did you come up with your name?

I love foxes, they’ve always been one of those spirit animals. I was watching a documentary that called a baby fox a “fox kit,” and I was like, “I kinda wish it was like a duckling–something cute like foxling.” I was looking for a name for my solo project, and that seemed perfect, so I dropped the g and went by Foxlin.

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

So many. Colin Meloy from The Decemberists, for sure, and Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes. Current ones are Manchester Orchestra, Wednesday, and Ratboys.

Do you have a favorite song you’ve made? Do you have one that you’re particularly excited to play at Farmer’s Ball?

We are playing two new songs that aren’t out yet, and we are very excited about them. I get some more guitar solos on them and they’re more energetic, so we’re very excited about those. We’ll also have our staple howling song where we make the audience howl, and some audience favorites as well.

What motivates and inspires you to make music?

Definitely all my life experiences. I’ve been living with cancer for about five years now, and a lot of material has come from that. Also with love, loss, and depression, and dealing with everyday life. That’s probably the biggest inspiration.

What is your ultimate goal for Foxlin?

I want to get to a level where I’m pretty comfortable and can just kind of play around whenever I feel like it, which I feel like I’m already kind of at.

I also have been doing therapist shows where I invite therapists to come mingle with people who are looking for one, because looking for a therapist can be hard. If I could have someone get a vibe for their therapist before even scheduling a session, that would cut out so much time and effort, and everything would be so much easier. The ultimate goal is to keep doing those annually and then take those from town to town and help out.

If you win Farmer’s Ball, how will you celebrate?

I know I want to use some of the money to record a new album, so that would be a celebration of sorts. But if I win Farmer’s Ball, to celebrate, maybe go to Wonderfair and buy everything?
