KU Cross Country Opens Up the Season with Two Victories at Bob Timmons Classic

Kansas opened up their season on Saturday morning at their home course, Rim Rock Farm, with two victories, one for the men’s team and one for the women’s squad.

Redshirt freshman Bryce Richards led the group of six Jayhawks in the top ten of the men’s race, finishing 2nd with a time of 19:31.6 in the six kilometer race. Behind Richards a pack of three Jayhawks came in to take 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

These runners were sophomore Michael Melgares, junior Carson Vickroy, and freshman Avery Hale registering times of 19:40.9, 19:42.1, and 19:43.5 respectively. Rounding out the rest of the men’s squad were 9th, 11th, 13th, 17th, and 19th place finishes from senior Jacob Ryan, junior Adel Yoonis, sophomore Ryan Liston, senior Markeen Caine, and junior Jack Mcdonald. These men finished the home course in times of 19:59.7, 20:08.6, 20:11.4, 20:42.2, and 20:56.7. The Jayhawks swept UMKC, Oral Roberts, and Kansas Wesleyan.

On the women’s side, junior Hannah Dimmick took home the individual victory in a time of 18:21.9 to lead the Jayhawks in the win over UMKC, Oral Roberts and Kansas Wesleyan.

Following behind Dimmick, Kansas accounted for the next six places. sophomore Riley Cooney, senior Jennifer Angles, freshman Cameron Gueldner, junior Grace Morgan, sophomore Emmie Skopec, and senior Rachel Simon placed 2nd through 7th for a dominant showing. These women completed the 5k course in times of 18:27.9, 18:30.6, 18:42.9, 18:51.8, 18:54.8, and 19:13.0.

After this fast start to the season, the teams will have to wait almost a month to compete again. Their next meet is the Rim Rock Classic on October 3rd.
