Seven days after a dominating performance against Rhode Island, the Jayhawks came out with no bounce in their step against Ohio.
Ohio jumped out to a quick 25-0 lead as the Jayhawk offense in the first half was abysmal, managing just one first down and accounting for 21 yards of total offense.
Ohio quarterback Greg Windham paced the Bobcat offense passing for 167 yards and a touchdown and running for 146 yards and another score. Windham controlled the ball and kept the Jayhawk defense on the field for the majority of the game as Ohio possessed the football for 43:38 to Kansas’ 13:56.
Down 28-7 at the half, Kansas did not go down without a fight. Montell Cozart found Steven Sims down the sideline for a 74 yard touchdown pass on just the second play of the half. Cozart would then go on to connect with Sims again just a few minutes later to cut the deficit to just 31-21.
From there on out, Ohio’s defense buckled down, forcing 3 straight punts and killing all momentum the Jayhawks had built. Cozart would finish the day 17-24 with 198 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. The lack of of any running game proved to be too much to overcome for Cozart as Kansas only managed to rack up 26 yards on the ground.
The outcome is nothing new for Kansas, as their last win over an FBS opponent came November 8th, 2014 against Iowa State.
The Jayhawks will look to rebound next week on the road as they travel to Memphis to take on a squad that defeated them last year at Memorial Stadium, 55-23.
