This year has been a great year for hyperpop, with the genre getting some incredible new releases and the recognition it deserves. For the newly initiated, hyperpop is a genre with a mix of EDM, electronica, dance and pop elements. Hyperpop was a niche subgenre but has recently become more mainstream, with artists like underscores, Jane Remover, Slayyyter and SOPHIE finally getting more recognition. In 2026, the genre has become a cultural sensation.
Lady Gaga helped popularise hyperpop in the 2010s, bringing the genre into the mainstream with the almost gnarly-sounding music from her third studio album, ARTPOP, and it’s been on the rise ever since. I was introduced to hyperpop in middle school with Charli XCX’s album “how i’m feeling now” and my love for the genre grew from songs like “pink diamond” and “party 4 u.” Charli XCX exploded in popularity in 2024, with her Grammy-winning album “BRAT” having its pop culture summer moment and creating space for more hyperpop artists to emerge and get attention.
This is where we’re introduced to Slayyyter. 2026 is definitely her year with her newest album, “WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA.” Hits like “CRANK” and “BEAT UP CHANEL$” have absolutely exploded, gaining online attention and becoming playlist staples. Her rise to stardom this year started with her jaw-dropping performance of “CRANK” at Coachella, where she drew massive crowds despite her early time slot. To me, she’s the perfect artist to bang your head to and just lose all control after a long week filled with college assignments and the treacherous walk to Daisy Hill.
