Kiwi Classics

Tunes from Australia and New Zeland

I, DJ Marsupial, will be broadcasting music birthed in the South – South of the equator that is, every Thursday from 6-7pm.

While I’m slightly partial to indie-elecro-pop-rock, during the show I’ll be taking listeners on a tour of popular music (indie and otherwise) that was formed “..in the Land Down Under” (Apologies for the cliché!).  Each show will consist of forward movement – a music journey that will be tied together with musical themes and melded by a mess of genre changes. Temporally bound, we are not! I’ll be playing truly great music both contemporary, and past.

Now, this may all sound jarring, so let me take you on a brief, 4-step, self-guided exploratory tour.

Consider the following musical progression.
1) Miami Horror- ”Sometimes”
synth-poprock Melbourne OZ, 2009

2) The Phoenix Foundation – “Buffalo”
Progressive-Indie-rock – Wellington NZ, 2010

3) Loon Lake – “Bad To Me”
Loose-indieRock – Melbourne OZ, 2011

4) Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls – “Dumb Things”
Rock – Sydney OZ, 1988

Do you feel it? If you haven’t just listened to these songs in order then, Go. Do It! If you have indeed listened, then you have just flown on the winds of time and progressed from synthy-pop to ‘old-school’ 80’s rock in 4-songs flat.

For further study, try out the following: Tin Sparrow, Choirboys, 1814, and Six60.
